Characterization of carbapenem resistance in environmental samples and Acinetobacter spp. isolates from wastewater and river water in Poland

Jakub Hubeny et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of carbapenem resistance genes in Acinetobacter spp. isolated from wastewater in a municipal WWTP and to determine their spread from treated wastewater to river water. The research found evidence that WWTP is a potential source of pollution, leading to the spread of alarming beta-lactam resistance genes in the natural environment, posing a serious epidemiological threat.

A catchment-scale assessment of the sanitary condition of treated wastewater and river water based on fecal indicators and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp

Liliana Serwecinska et al.

Summary: Urbanization and population growth have created significant sanitation challenges in cities and communities worldwide. This study conducted an extensive assessment of sanitary conditions of river water and treated wastewater from seventeen WWTPs along the Pilica River in central Poland, identifying potential hot spots of sanitary hazards. The presence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bacteria in effluent wastewaters and river water samples was highlighted as a significant public health concern.

Occurrence of emerging sulfonamide resistance (sul1 and sul2) associated with mobile integrons-integrase (intI1 and intI2) in riverine systems

Preeti Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: The study revealed the widespread occurrence of antibiotics in riverine systems under different ecological and geo-climatic zones, with bacteria exhibiting multidrug resistance and investigating factors associated with integrons and environmental factors. The data can be utilized for raising public awareness and guiding local governing bodies in regulating against antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Profiles of Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated from Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) of the Island of Maio, Cape Verde

Matilde Fernandes et al.

Summary: The study found that Gram-negative bacteria isolated from nesting loggerhead turtles in Maio, Cape Verde showed lower levels of antimicrobial resistance compared to other subpopulations, but raised concerns about resistance to carbapenems and multiple antimicrobial resistance indices higher than 0.20. Furthermore, the bacteria identified in the study presented complex virulence profiles, including the ability to produce biofilms, posing a significant threat to public health given the evidence of illegal consumption of turtle-related products on the island.
