Microbial desalination cell: Desalination through conserving energy

Masirah Zahid et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for potable water has led to the development of efficient desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis membranes. Microbial desalination cells (MDC) have been investigated for some time, but their actual relevance in the desalination industry is still unclear. Further research is needed to scale up the MDC technology, address its technical shortcomings, and reduce costs and environmental impact.

Anode biofilm maturation time, stable cell performance time, and time-course electrochemistry in a single-chamber microbial fuel cell with a brush-anode

Huong V. H. Tran et al.

Summary: For accurate and reproducible MFC experiments, it is important to determine the time point at which MFCs produce stable cell performance. Four replicate single-chamber MFCs were tested over a period of 17 weeks using polarization and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests. The strong MFCs showed continuous performance enhancement initially and maintained good subsequent performance, while the weak MFC experienced a performance drop initially and showed poor subsequent performance. All MFCs reached stable performance after 9 weeks. The strong MFCs exhibited significantly higher power and lower anode resistance compared to the weak MFC. However, their cathode resistances were similar. CV results demonstrated continuous increase in anodic current production in all MFCs, indicating the growth of anode biofilms; however, this increase did not correspond to an increase in MFC performance. Anodic CVs showed a typical S-shape curve, but the weak MFC-1 showed straight lines from the 9th week onwards. The weak MFC-1 exhibited smaller CV currents and thinner CV curves compared to the strong MFCs. Regression analysis revealed that anode resistance was a limiting factor for the weak MFC, while cathode resistance was a limiting factor for the strong MFCs. This suggests an operating principle of improving anodes in weak MFCs and cathodes in strong MFCs to achieve better performance.

Coupling magnetite and goethite nanoparticles with sorbent materials for olive mill wastewater remediation

Fadwa Odeh et al.

Summary: This study developed an environmentally friendly and cost-effective media to remove phenolic compounds from wastewater. Magnetite and goethite nanoparticles were prepared and coupled with zeolite, achieving high removal rates under optimal conditions. Furthermore, the combination of granular activated carbon with the composite media further improved the removal efficiency.

Improvement of air cathode performance in microbial fuel cells by using catalysts made by binding metal-organic framework and activated carbon through ultrasonication and solution precipitation

Bonyoung Koo et al.

Summary: Activated carbon is an inexpensive catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction in microbial fuel cells, but its electrochemical catalytic activity is poor. This study combined ZIF-67 with activated carbon to improve its performance, resulting in higher power density compared to AC and Pt cathodes. The addition of ZIF-67 also improved the oxygen reduction reaction rate and decreased charge transfer impedance in the MFC system.
