Adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting powered by solar energy: Comprehensive review on desiccant materials and systems

Mohamed G. Gado et al.

Summary: Atmospheric water harvesting is a potential source of freshwater for remote areas lacking access to water and electricity. This study comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art atmospheric water harvesters and their desiccant materials, focusing on their adsorption capability, kinetics, and suitability for different climate conditions. Various designs of solar-powered atmospheric water harvesters are summarized. The findings suggest that MOF-801, MOF-808, MOF-841, HKUST-1, and CPO-27(Ni) have great potential for water harvesting in arid areas, while MIL-101(Cr) performs well in humid areas but is irrelevant for water harvesting in dry zones.

Performance evaluation of PV panels/wind turbines hybrid system for green hydrogen generation and storage: Energy, exergy, economic, and enviroeconomic

Mohamed Nasser et al.

Summary: The study conducts a comprehensive assessment of a hydrogen production system from renewable energy sources, focusing on solar and wind. The hybrid system, consisting of PV panels, wind turbines, a water electrolyzer, a hydrogen gas compressor, and a tank, is analyzed in terms of energy, exergy, economics, and environmental impact. The case study in Egypt using MATLAB/Simulink software demonstrates that the system can produce 1,912 kg of hydrogen per year, with an energy efficiency of 16.42% and an exergy efficiency of 12.76%. The economic analysis reveals that the cost of electricity (LCOE), hydrogen (LCOH), and hydrogen compression (LCOCH) ranges from 0.137-0.219 $/kWh, 3.73-4.656 $/kg, and 5.922-7.35 $/kg, respectively. The payback period varies from 7 to 13.85 years, and the system can reduce CO2 emissions by 689.4 tons over its lifetime.
