Superimposed secondary alteration of oil reservoirs. Part II: The characteristics of biomarkers under the superimposed influences of biodegradation and thermal alteration

Weimin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of petroleum biomarkers in oil samples with varying levels of biodegradation under artificial thermal maturity. The results suggest that n-alkanes can be further generated under advanced thermal stress, and biomarkers in oils that have suffered superimposed alterations have complex sources. Source related parameters based on steranes and terpanes seem reliable only up to a certain level of biodegradation and thermal alteration.

The influence of Early Cretaceous paleoclimate warming event on sedimentary environment evolution and organic matter sources in Yin'e Basin: Evidence from petrology and molecular geochemistry

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, various analytical methods were used to investigate the upper member of the Bayingebi Formation (K(1)b(2)) in the Yin'e Basin. The results showed that the organic-rich fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Early Cretaceous lacustrine environment contain different types of dolomite and kerogen. The study also revealed that the sedimentary environment evolution of the lakes was influenced by a paleoclimate warming event, with higher rainfall during the peak of lake development and increased salinity during the sedimentation period, leading to a transition from a freshwater lake to a high-salinity lake.

Hygroscopicity of organic compounds as a function of organic functionality, water solubility, molecular weight, and oxidation level

Shuang Han et al.

Summary: The hygroscopicity of aerosol particles has significant effects on their properties and chemistry. This study measures the hygroscopic properties of 23 organic compounds and evaluates the role of physicochemical properties in their hygroscopicity. The results show that the hygroscopicity of organics varies with functional groups and solubility, and it generally increases with O : C ratios.

Biomarker assessment of oil biodegradation, water washing, and source rock characteristics of oil seeps from the Foothill Zone along the Tigris River, Northern Iraq

Mohamed W. Alkhafaji

Summary: Oil seep samples from the Foothill Zone of northern Iraq were geochemically characterized to determine the level of biodegradation and water washing, as well as the depositional environment of correlative source rocks. Analysis of biomarkers, carbon isotopes, and sulphur content indicated that the oil seeps originated from carbonate source rocks of Jurassic age deposited in an anoxic marine environment.

Geochemical characteristics of the lower cretaceous Xiguayuan Formation mudrocks in the Luanping Basin, northern China: Implications for the hydrocarbon generation potential and sedimentary environments

Shubiao Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that mudrocks in the Luanping Basin's Xiguayuan Formation have good hydrocarbon generation potential, with the main organic sources being aquatic plankton and higher plants, and the dominant organic matter being type II and III. The mudrocks formed in an anoxic lacustrine sedimentary environment, with a semiarid paleoclimate and key factors for organic matter accumulation being excellent preservation and moderate productivity.

Geological conditions, reservoir evolution and favorable exploration directions of marine ultra-deep oil and gas in China

Li Jianzhong et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the structural background, petroleum geological conditions, and typical regional oil and gas reservoirs in marine ultra-deep oil and gas regions in China. It reveals the evolution processes and key controlling factors of accumulation in these reservoirs, which are mainly distributed in the Sichuan, Tarim, and Ordos cratonic basins. The dominant carbonate rocks in the ultra-deep reservoirs are controlled by high-energy sedimentary environments and later-stage corrosion and fractures. The accumulation of oil and gas in these regions is influenced by both static and dynamic geological elements.
