Summary: In this study, the interactions of divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) with lipid vesicles were investigated using SANS, SAXS, and densitometric measurements. The results showed that the structural parameters of the lipid bilayer remained relatively unchanged upon ion addition, while the vesicle radius decreased. This study validates the concept of lipid-ion interactions and proposes a possible mechanism for the mixed mode interactions in lipid vesicles.

Molecular model of a sensor of two-component signaling system

Summary: Two-component systems (TCS) are signaling systems present in all domains of life, consisting of a signal receptor and a response regulator. While chemoreceptors have been shown to function in highly ordered arrays, much less is known about photoreceptors. Small-angle scattering (SAS) studies suggest that detergent-solubilized sensory rhodopsin II forms dimers at low salt concentration, which associate into trimers of dimers at higher buffer molarities. The trimer of dimers is tripod-shaped and the contacts occur through cytoplasmic regions, while transmembrane regions remain unconnected.
