Effect of assisted transverse magnetic field on distortion behavior of thin-walled components in WEDM process

Yanming Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the machining performance of thin-walled components made from difficult-to-process materials in the aviation manufacturing industry. The study focuses on reducing distortion in the wire electric discharge machining-low speed (WEDM-LS) process by applying a transverse magnetic field. Theoretical analysis and experimental verification demonstrate the significant improvement in discharge point distribution and reduction in distortion achieved by the transverse magnetic field.

Summary: The study quantifies the impact of parametric uncertainty on the performance of the WEDM process, constructing four different machine learning models using noisy experimental data and comparing their goodness of fit. Results indicate that pulse on time and peak current are the most sensitive parameters influencing the performance measures of WEDM.

Bubble Behavior and Its Effect on Surface Integrity in Laser-Induced Plasma Micro-Machining Silicon Wafer

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively investigates the static and dynamical behaviors of bubbles in laser-induced plasma micro-machining (LIPMM), and explains the mechanisms of bubble generation and growth, bubble motion and explosion, and the effect of bubbles behavior on machining characteristics. A volume of fluid model is established to simulate the dynamical behavior of bubbles, and experiments are carried out to analyze the impact of bubble explosion on surface integrity, surface defects, and hardness.

Fabrication and droplet impact performance of superhydrophobic Ti6Al4V surface by laser induced plasma micro-machining

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a laser-induced plasma micromachining technique was used to fabricate a super-hydrophobic surface with a micro-nano hierarchical structure on a titanium alloy. Experimental and simulation results showed that as the contact angle increases, the spreading diameter decreases and the rebound height increases.

Study on productivity and aerosol emissions of magnetic field-assisted EDM process of SiCp/Al composite with high volume fractions

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic field assisted electrical discharge machining (MF-EDM) of SiC particulate reinforced Al-based metal matrix composites with high volume fractions (HVF - SiCp/Al) was proposed to improve sustainable machining performance. Experiments based on the Taguchi method showed that pulse current was a major factor in the process, and magnetic field assistance significantly improved surface integrity. An optimization algorithm was used to determine optimal machining parameters, leading to a reduction in electrode wear rate and aerosol emissions while increasing material removal rate.

Summary: The study found that the tool life of carbide tools is longer in laser assisted machining compared to conventional machining, and abrasive wear is identified as the predominant wear mechanism. The results also showed the development of an improved wear model for predicting average flank wear, and the comparison of forces between particles and cutting tools explained the improvement in tool life.
