A geometric formulation of linear elasticity based on discrete exterior calculus

Pieter D. Boom et al.

Summary: This study presents a direct formulation of linear elasticity of cell complexes based on discrete exterior calculus, which calculates the relations between displacement differences and internal forces to simulate macroscopic elastic behavior. Numerical simulations have validated the accuracy and reliability of this formulation in several classical problems with known solutions.

Finite Element Method (FEM) computations in frequency domain & photonic band diagram: Applications to microcavity characterization

M. Jyothish et al.

Summary: Photonics microcavities confine light to small volumes, enhancing nonlinear and quantum effects, and have wide applications in various fields. This paper proposes a fast and computationally efficient method for calculating the photonic bandgap of microcavities, along with a novel technique to derive the microcavity band diagram from that of a single unit cell, reducing computational time and complexity. The combination of these techniques makes microcavity eigenmode and field diagram calculations straightforward, significantly faster, and less resource-intensive.

Design and analysis of all optical half subtractor in 2D photonic crystal platform

Asghar Askarian

Summary: This paper presents a novel design of an all optical half subtractor using three nonlinear resonant rings and eight waveguides. The advantages of this design compared to previous structures include low power consumption, compactness, ultrafast operation, and high contrast ratio. The ON-OFF contrast ratios for output ports are about 10.31 dB and 14.96 dB, with maximum rise, fall, and delay times of approximately 0.8 ps, 0.45 ps, and 1.3 ps, respectively.

Isogeometric discrete differential forms: Non-uniform degrees, Bezier extraction, polar splines and flows on surfaces

Deepesh Toshniwal et al.

Summary: Spaces of discrete differential forms are useful in numerically solving partial differential equations for phenomena like electromagnetics and fluid mechanics, with pointwise satisfaction of conservation laws in the discrete setting. Isogeometric discrete differential forms constructed using smooth splines, along with computing Bezier extraction operators, can build complexes on meshes containing singularities. These spline complexes demonstrate the same cohomological structure as the de Rham complex and are used to simulate generalized Stokes flow and exhibit optimal approximation and stability.

Generalized finite difference schemes with higher order Whitney forms

Lauri Kettunen et al.

Summary: This paper addresses two issues in finite difference schemes for wave propagation problems, including a generalization of Yee's scheme for a class of wave problems and a strategy to systematically exploit higher order Whitney elements. The local character of the Hodge relation is shown to be preserved in Yee-like schemes, allowing for the imposition of constitutive laws on a finite set of points. An example is provided to demonstrate that the usage of higher order Whitney forms does not require a change in the actual solution process.
