Anthropogenic pressures increase extinction risk of an isolated Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) population in southwestern China, as revealed by a combination of molecular- and landscape-scale approaches

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: The study identified low genetic diversity and high level of inbreeding in an isolated Asian elephant population in southwestern China, which is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and increased isolation from human activities. Recommendations to relocate villagers and abandon farmland could potentially increase suitable habitat and aid in the protection of the population.

Age-Specific differences in Asian elephant defecation, dung decay, detection and their implication for dung count

Ashokkumar Mohanarangan et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the relationship between dung counts and faecal density, defecation rate, decay rate, and age of Asian elephants in the tropical forest of southern India. The results show that the defecation rate increases with the age of elephants and is lower in the wet season compared to the dry season. The dung bolus diameter increases with the age of elephants and can be used to estimate their age and age structure. However, the disparity in dung production rate leads to lower dung abundance and detection probability for younger elephants.
