Sensitivity Improvement of Phi-OTDR by Fiber Cable Coils

Konstantin V. Stepanov et al.

Summary: In this study, we enhanced the sensitivity of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) by constructing coils in the sensor cable, resulting in a 2.2 times increase in sensitivity. Testing showed that using coils detected 95% of events, compared to only 20% with a straight cable, without requiring any modifications to the device.

Application of the Proposed Fiber Optic Time Differential BOCDA Sensor System for Impact Damage Detection of a Composite Cylinder

Bo-Hun Choi et al.

Summary: By utilizing the proposed time differential BOCDA sensor system, researchers were able to accurately measure the residual strain in the optical-fiber-embedded composite cylinder after impact events of varying energy levels. The study showed a linear relationship between the total amount of residual strain and the applied external impact energy, as well as the varying shape of the damage map at different spatial resolutions.

Comparative Analysis of the Brillouin Frequency Shift Determining Accuracy in Extremely Noised Spectra by Various Correlation Methods

A. Krivosheev et al.

Summary: This study compares two correlation methods for finding the maxima of Brillouin spectra, one being the traditional Lorentzian function correlation method and the other being the authors' developed Backward correlation method. The results indicate that when the probability of artifact occurrence in Brillouin scattering spectra exceeds 9%, the BWC method shows better results compared to other methods.

Digital Filtering Techniques for Performance Improvement of Golay Coded TDM-FBG Sensor

Mohamed M. Elgaud et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using Golay complementary pairs encoding in TDM-FBG sensors can significantly improve signal-to-noise ratio, but the unipolar form of Golay coding has performance issues, prompting the proposal and implementation of digital filtering techniques to alleviate these limitations. Experimentally, moving averages, Savitzky-Golay, and moving median filters were applied to process signals, with the moving median filter proving to be the most effective in signal shape, transition time, SNIR, and spatial resolution.
