Compromised Effectiveness of Thermal Inactivation of Legionella pneumophila in Water Heater Sediments and Water, and Influence of the Presence of Vermamoeba vermiformis

Margot Cazals et al.

Summary: Intermittent reduction of temperature set-points and periodic shutdowns of water heaters have been proposed to reduce energy consumption in buildings. However, their consequences on the occurrence and proliferation of Legionella pneumophila (Lp) in hot water systems have not been documented. This study investigated the impact of single and repeated heat shocks on L. pneumophila and its host bacteria, and found that heat shock was only effective at elevated temperatures and that Legionella can rapidly proliferate under low temperature conditions in the presence of hosts.

The Tail-Specific Protease Is Important for Legionella pneumophila To Survive Thermal Stress in Water and inside Amoebae

Joseph Saoud et al.

Summary: Legionella pneumophila is often found in water systems, such as hot water distribution systems, and heat treatment is used to reduce its concentration. However, Lp quickly recolonizes these systems, indicating an efficient heat shock response. This study shows that the protease Tsp and the two-component system CpxRA are crucial for Lp's survival under thermal stress in water and within host cells.

Two Bacterial Small Heat Shock Proteins, IbpA and IbpB, Form a Functional Heterodimer

Artur Pirog et al.

Summary: Small heat shock proteins are a class of ATP-independent chaperones that prevent protein aggregation in stress conditions and facilitate refolding by ATP-dependent chaperones. In some Enterobacterales, a two-protein sHsp system has evolved from a gene duplication event, where the two proteins interact, influence each other's expression and degradation. The formation of a heterodimer between IbpA and IbpB is found to be the functional unit of this system, similar to the homodimers of single bacterial sHsps.

Adaptation of Dinoroseobacter shibae to oxidative stress and the specific role of RirA

Nicole Beier et al.

Summary: Dinoroseobacter shibae living in the photic zone of marine ecosystems is exposed to oxygen and adapts to different oxidative stressors by regulating proteins involved in biosynthesis and iron metabolism. Response to peroxide stress is mediated by proteins like thioredoxin and peroxiredoxin, while superoxide and thiol stress affect different sets of proteins. The downregulation of RirA by all stressors in D. shibae suggests a role in oxidative stress resistance and deletion of rirA leads to upregulation of proteins associated with DNA and protein protection and repair.
