Analysis of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) needs and PrEP use in Germany among men who have sex with men

Ulrich Marcus et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the number of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users among men having sex with men (MSM) in Germany from 2017 through 2020, and analyze if PrEP needs expressed in 2017 were met by the expansion of PrEP until 2020. The results showed that there were an estimated 15,600 to 21,600 PrEP users in Germany by the end of June 2020, corresponding to 40-55% of men with PrEP use intention in 2017. However, there were large regional inequalities in PrEP access, with a significant number of men still having unmet PrEP needs.

Daily and on-demand HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis with emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil (ANRS PREVENIR): a prospective observational cohort study

Jean-Michel Molina et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the effectiveness of on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. The results suggest that on-demand PrEP is a valid alternative to daily PrEP in reducing HIV-1 incidence among high-risk individuals.

Everything counts - a method to determine viral suppression among people living with HIV using longitudinal data for the HIV care continuum - results of two large, German, multi-center real-life cohort studies over 20years (1999-2018)

Daniel Schmidt et al.

Summary: By analyzing longitudinal cohort data from Germany, a standardized method was developed to reconstruct individual viral load courses. The study found a continuous increase in viral suppression after ART initiation, with a notable proportion of individuals showing low-level viremia. Efforts to achieve viral suppression and monitor health risks and drug resistance are important in the HIV care continuum.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Sexually Transmitted Infections surveillance data: incidence drop or artefact?

Alexis Sentis et al.

Summary: The study found that there was a 51% decline in reported STI cases in Catalonia since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an average reduction of 56% during lockdown. This decrease was observed across different types of STIs, with chlamydia seeing the largest decrease of 72% and syphilis the smallest at 22%. The findings suggest that there may be significant underdiagnosis and underreporting of STIs, particularly in certain demographics, indicating a need for strengthened diagnostic programs and surveillance.

Long-term protection from HIV infection with oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in gay and bisexual men: findings from the expanded and extended EPIC-NSW prospective implementation study

Andrew E. Grulich et al.

Summary: This study found that HIV incidence remained low over up to 3 years of follow-up in individuals at high risk who were prescribed PrEP. Factors associated with increased HIV incidence included being younger, living in areas with fewer gay men, reporting more risk behaviors at baseline, and having lower medication possession ratio (MPR). Overall, the study showed that with affordable PrEP and associated healthcare services, low HIV incidence rates can be maintained in high-risk populations.
