Phosphorylated cellulose for water purification: a promising material with outstanding adsorption capacity towards methylene blue

Maria Hadid et al.

Summary: Phosphorylation of cellulose using environmentally friendly chemicals leads to a negatively charged material with high adsorption capacity for methylene blue in water purification. Different cellulose sources exhibit varying degrees of functionalization and methylene blue removal efficiency, with wood cellulose showing the highest phosphorylation degree and adsorption properties. The possibility of regenerating the used sorbent by washing it with phosphate ions is demonstrated with a 97% regeneration rate.
