High-solid ethylenediamine pretreatment to fractionate new lignin streams from lignocellulosic biomass

Li Xu et al.

Summary: The study utilized a high-solid ethylenediamine pretreatment method to develop a new aminolignin with high aqueous solubility and minimal condensed structures. Unique amination reactions introduced hydrophilic amine and amide groups into lignin substructures, enhancing lignin processability. This solid-state EDA pretreatment holds promise for improving lignin's solubility and minimizing condensation, potentially advancing lignin-first biomass fractionation.

Comparative study on enzymatic digestibility of acid-pretreated poplar and larch based on a comprehensive analysis of the lignin-derived recalcitrance

Yuan Jia et al.

Summary: Enzymatic digestibility of acid-pretreated poplar was found to be better than larch, with lignin physical blocking playing a significant role in limiting enzymatic hydrolysis. The distribution of lignin influences its effects on enzyme non-productive binding during enzymatic hydrolysis, with potential for improvement of enzymatic hydrolysis on acid-pretreated woody biomass.

Preparation and properties of novel bio-based epoxy resin thermosets from lignin oligomers and cardanol

Guifeng Liu et al.

Summary: A series of lignin-based epoxy resins (LEPs) were prepared and blended with renewable epoxied cardanol glycidyl ether (ECGE), then cured with methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MeTHPA) to form high-performance epoxy thermosets. The incorporation of ECGE and separation of monomer-rich fractions from lignin oligomers improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the cured products significantly. These bio-based epoxy resins show potential as renewable alternatives to BPA epoxy resins.

Organosolv pretreatment assisted by carbocation scavenger to mitigate surface barrier effect of lignin for improving biomass saccharification and utilization

Qiulu Chu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of carbocation scavengers in acid EOS pretreatment to improve biomass fractionation and coproduction of fermentable sugars and lignin adsorbents. Results show that the additives help mitigate lignin inhibition on cellulose hydrolysis, particularly diminishing surface barrier effect, leading to improved pretreatment efficacy. The addition of 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate significantly increases selective lignin removal and cellulose hydrolysis yield, enabling the recovery of fermentable sugars and lignin adsorbents from lignocellulosic biomass.

The effect of hydrogen bond on the thermal and mechanical properties of furan epoxy resins: Molecular dynamics simulation study

Wanying Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of hydrogen bonds on epoxy networks. The results showed that H-bonds significantly affected the Young's modulus, whereas their influence on T-g was limited compared to factors like molecular weight and steric hindrance. This study provides valuable insights into the behavior of H-bonds in furan rings and may guide the design of epoxy resins effectively.
