Short-time deep eutectic solvents pretreatment enhanced production of fermentable sugars and tailored lignin nanoparticles from abaca

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that short-time DES pretreatment is effective in producing high-yield fermentable sugars and tailored LNPs from abaca. Analysis using NMR and GPC showed that DES lignin fractions have depolymerized structures with relatively low molecular weight, and TEM analysis confirmed that these lignin fractions are LNPs. Furthermore, all DES lignin exhibited excellent antioxidant activities, making them potential natural antioxidants for industrial applications.

Pretreatment of corn stover by acidic and basic choline chloride solutions for enzymatic hydrolysis

Benkun Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, acid and alkali catalyzed choline chloride pretreatment of corn stover showed different effects on lignin and xylan removal, with acidified ChCl being more effective in delignification and alkalified ChCl better at removing xylan. However, alkalified ChCl pretreatment resulted in higher glucose yield compared to acidified ChCl pretreatment. The correlation studies indicated that high delignification and larger cellulose crystallite size were key factors contributing to high enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Additionally, analysis of extracted lignin showed changes in molecular weight and phenolic hydroxyl groups based on different pretreatment methods.

Effects of Organic Solvents on the Organosolv Pretreatment of Degraded Empty Fruit Bunch for Fractionation and Lignin Removal

Danny Wei Kit Chin et al.

Summary: The research on utilizing EFB for value-added applications like activated carbon and biofuels is limited, partly due to its susceptibility to microbial and fungi degradation in the natural environment. After organosolv pretreatment, high-purity cellulose and lignin can be successfully recovered, making it a suitable feedstock for downstream biorefinery processes.
