Design and Optimization of Ultrasonic Links With Phased Arrays for Wireless Power Transmission to Biomedical Implants

Zeinab Kashani et al.

Summary: This paper presents the theory and design methodology of ultrasound wireless power transfer (WPT) links using phased arrays and millimeter-sized receivers. Through an iterative design procedure, the optimal geometries of the ultrasound phased array and receiver transducer, as well as the optimal operation frequency, are found to maximize power transfer efficiency.

Continuous monitoring of deep-tissue haemodynamics with stretchable ultrasonic phased arrays

Chonghe Wang et al.

Summary: The development and testing of a prototype skin-conformal ultrasonic phased array for monitoring haemodynamic signals from tissues up to 14 cm beneath the skin are reported. This device allows for active focusing and steering of ultrasound beams to target regions of interest, opening up opportunities for wearable diagnostics. In healthy volunteers, the phased array has shown promising results in monitoring Doppler spectra from cardiac tissues and estimating central and cerebral blood flows in real time.

Time reversal beamforming for powering ultrasonic implants

Braeden C. Benedict et al.

Summary: Efficient ultrasonic beamforming to millimeter-scale neural implants using time reversal is proposed in this study, which can reduce implant volume, improve tolerance to misalignment, and allow simultaneous operation of multiple implants. The custom ultrasound phased array system demonstrates beam focusing and steering in liquid and tissue environments. Experimental comparisons of time reversal with other beamforming techniques show its effectiveness in energy transfer efficiency at varying depths and angles. Additionally, simultaneous power delivery to multiple implants is successfully demonstrated.
