Common-Mode Voltage Elimination in Multilevel Power Inverter-Based Motor Drive Applications

Endika Robles et al.

Summary: The industry and academia are focused on finding more efficient and reliable electrical machines and motor drives. Many motors driven by pulse-width modulated converters face the recurring problem of common-mode voltage (CMV). Multilevel converters have proven to be useful tools for solving these problems and mitigating CMV over the past few decades. However, there is a lack of complete information on CMV issues and the different multilevel alternatives. The objective of this work is to determine how multilevel power converters provide additional degrees of freedom to reduce CMV by using specific modulation techniques, making it easier for engineers and scientists to find solutions.

New Modulation Strategy for Five-Phase High-Frequency VSI Based on SigmaDelta Modulators

Fernando Acosta-Cambranis et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new modulation strategy for a five-phase high-frequency voltage source inverter based on sigma-delta modulators. The strategy achieves the same switching states as the traditional large-medium-large-medium space vector modulation using sigma-delta modulation, which operates efficiently at high switching frequencies using wide-bandgap devices. The proposed modulation techniques minimize switching losses, mitigate low-order harmonics, decrease the amplitude of high-frequency harmonics, and reduce common-mode voltage dv/dt transitions.

Sawtooth Carrier-Based PWM Methods With Common-Mode Voltage Reduction for Symmetrical Multiphase Two-Level Inverters With Odd Phase Number

Zicheng Liu et al.

Summary: The SCPWM techniques proposed in this article aim to reduce common-mode voltage in symmetrical multiphase two-level inverters. Theoretical analysis shows that switching between mirror-symmetrical carriers within one phase and the overlapping of sawtooth carriers' straight edges among different phases can decrease CMV amplitude and changing frequency. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the method in a five-phase induction machine and multiphase RL loads.
