Cascading Failure Analysis of CyberPhysical Power Systems Considering Routing Strategy

Xingle Gao et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel model is developed to study cascading failure in cyber-physical power systems. A discrete packet traffic model is used to describe dynamic data transmission in the information network, following a specific routing strategy. Furthermore, a dynamic load flow model that considers the power-frequency characteristics of loads and generators is applied to describe the dynamic flow process of the power network. The proposed model allows considering the impacts of data packet transmission failures and voltage-related failures in the cascading process. The effects of routing strategy and information network topology on the severity of cascading failure are analyzed, and simulation results confirm the model's applicability and reveal the influence of routing strategy on cascading failure in cyber-coupled systems. Moreover, it is shown that using the main hub in the information network as a dispatching center, along with a spread out degree distribution of the information network, reduces the severity of cascading failure in the cyber-coupled system.

Constrained-Differential-Evolution-Based Stealthy Sparse Cyber-Attack and Countermeasure in an AC Smart Grid

Kang-Di Lu et al.

Summary: This article investigates the stealthy cyber-attack and its countermeasure in smart grids. A stealthy sparse cyber-attack model is proposed, and a constrained optimization problem is formulated to design the model by minimizing the number of contaminated meters. A generalized-cumulative-sum-based detector is developed to detect the proposed cyber-attacks. Numerical studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed countermeasure.

Distributed Data-Driven Intrusion Detection for Sparse Stealthy FDI Attacks in Smart Grids

Jiayu Shi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a distributed data-driven intrusion detection approach to reveal the existence of stealthy false data injection attacks in power systems and avoid overfitting issues. The method first estimates the entire system state using a distributed state estimation algorithm, and then uses the state of each local area to train neural networks for attack detection. Simulation results on the IEEE 118-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method not only reduces the risk of overfitting but also can pinpoint the areas that have been attacked.

Vulnerability Assessment of Power Grids Against Cost-Constrained Hybrid Attacks

Xiaolin Gao et al.

Summary: This study models hybrid attacks in power systems and proposes attack centrality metrics, greedy hybrid attack, and optimal hybrid attack algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the optimal attack is more effective than the greedy one, and, surprisingly, local centrality based attack algorithms outperform global centrality based ones when attack cost is a concern.

On the security of ANN-based AC state estimation in smart grid

Tian Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of adversarial false data injection attacks on ANN-based state estimation, proposing two algorithms to generate attack vectors and evaluating their performance through simulations under different attack scenarios. The results show that the DE algorithm is more effective than SLSQP in all cases, successfully degrading the accuracy of ANN state estimation.

Finite-Time Event-Triggered Control for Semi-Markovian Switching Cyber-Physical Systems With FDI Attacks and Applications

Wenhai Qi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the finite-time event-triggered control problem for nonlinear semi-Markovian switching cyber-physical systems under false data injection attacks. The proposed event-triggered scheme effectively avoids network resource waste and establishes a closed-loop system model considering network-induced delay. By analyzing stochastic finite-time stability of the closed-loop system, the solvability conditions for the finite-time controller are established.

Stealthy MTD Against Unsupervised Learning-Based Blind FDI Attacks in Power Systems

Martin Higgins et al.

Summary: This paper explores the vulnerability of moving target defenses (MTD) in power systems to unsupervised learning-based false data injection (FDI) attacks, and proposes a method to combine MTD with physical watermarking to enhance system resilience. A novel intelligent attack incorporating dimensionality reduction and density-based spatial clustering is shown to effectively maintain stealth against traditional MTD strategies.
