Time at risk: Individual spatial behaviour drives effectiveness of marine protected areas and fitness

David Villegas-Rios et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of individual variation in mobility on the risk of crossing Marine Protected Area (MPA) borders and exposure to spillover fisheries for fish populations. The research found that fish with larger and more dispersed home ranges were at higher risk when their home range centroid was closer to MPA borders. Additionally, individuals spending more time at risk were more likely to be harvested by fisheries outside the MPA, highlighting the importance of considering individual behavior when designing and implementing MPAs.

A quantitative discriminant method of elbow point for the optimal number of clusters in clustering algorithm

Congming Shi et al.

Summary: Clustering, a traditional machine learning method, often relies on a predetermined exact number of clusters which may not be practical in real-world scenarios where the number of clusters is unpredictable. A new elbow point discriminant method is proposed to estimate the optimal cluster number using statistical metrics. Experimental results demonstrate that this method outperforms the widely used Silhouette method in determining the optimal cluster number.

Selection on fish personality differs between a no-take marine reserve and fished areas

Susanna Huneide Thorbjornsen et al.

Summary: Marine reserves can protect fish populations by increasing abundance and body size, and fish behavior is influenced by protection offered by marine reserves. Specifically, the home range size of sea trout may represent a personality trait. The survival of individuals in marine reserves is affected by their home range size, depending on the time spent in the reserve.
