Explosive volcanism in Noctis Fossae on Mars

B. Pieterek et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the volcanic activity in the Noctis Fossae region on Mars, identifying 25 volcanic cones and associated lava flows. The cones are suggested to be explosive scoria cones based on their morphological data. Using dating methods, it is estimated that the cones formed over a period of 300 million years to 50 million years ago, indicating long-lived volcanism in the area. These findings contribute to the understanding of the magmatic plumbing system and hydrothermal activity in Tharsis region.

The Marsquake catalogue from InSight, sols 0-478

John F. Clinton et al.

Summary: The InSight mission has been collecting high-quality seismic data on Mars since February 2019, identifying 465 seismic events within the first year, with events categorized into low frequency and high frequency families. Additionally, 712 short duration but high frequency events have been observed, likely associated with a local source driven by thermal stresses.

An overview of explosive volcanism on Mars

Petr Broz et al.

Summary: Decades of space exploration have revealed that Mars has been shaped by volcanic activity throughout its history. Observations of explosive volcanic features, such as paterae and volcanic cones, suggest differences in volcanic activity between Mars and Earth. The relatively sparse occurrence of explosive volcanism on Mars indicates a gap in our understanding of martian volcanism and highlights potential compositional differences between Mars and Earth.

Dynamics of large effusive eruptions driven by caldera collapse

Alberto Roman et al.

Summary: A physical model is proposed to explain the dynamics of large effusive basaltic eruptions associated with caldera collapse, showing that the collapse itself sustains the eruptions and requires topography-generated pressures. This model is consistent with data from the 2018 Kilauea eruption, revealing the activity of two reservoirs and placing constraints on their connectivity. The physical framework is found to be generally applicable to the largest instrumented caldera collapse eruptions of the past fifty years.

Seismic detection of the martian core

Simon C. Stahler et al.

Summary: The study found that Mars has a core radius of around 1830 +/- 40 kilometers, with a density of 5.7 to 6.3 grams per cubic centimeter. The martian mantle is mineralogically similar to Earth's upper mantle and transition zone, but lacks a bridgmanite-dominated lower mantle, suggesting a different geological structure. This also affects the seismic observations of potentially active regions on Mars.
