What we learn about bipolar disorder from large-scale neuroimaging: Findings and future directions from theENIGMABipolar Disorder Working Group

Christopher R. K. Ching et al.

Summary: MRI-derived brain measures have been widely studied in bipolar disorder (BD) and provide insights into the connections between genes, the environment, and behavior. The ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group is a collaborative effort that aims to generate consensus findings and improve the replicability of studies on BD. Through large-scale neuroimaging studies, the working group has discovered patterns of brain alterations associated with BD, as well as the effects of medications and clinical risk profiles.

Mapping relationships among schizophrenia, bipolar and schizoaffective disorders: A deep classification and clustering framework using fMRI time series

Weizheng Yan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework for the classification and clustering of psychiatric disorders using brain imaging data. They developed a new multi-scale recurrent neural network model and successfully achieved multi-class classification of mental illnesses, visualizing the differences between different disorders. They also identified biomarkers related to the classification.

Flexible Brain Transitions Between Hierarchical Network Segregation and Integration Associated With Cognitive Performance During a Multisource Interference Task

Rong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated hierarchical modules in brain functional networks by designing a multisource interference task and introducing the nested-spectral partition method. It found that brain networks exhibit more flexible transitions between segregated and integrated configurations in the task state, which is associated with better cognitive performance.

Lifespan associations of resting-state brain functional networks with ADHD symptoms

Rong Wang et al.

Summary: The neural mechanisms and symptom correlations of ADHD may be shared between children and adults with ADHD. This study found that ADHD patients have a quadratic association in the whole-brain and most functional systems, while the limbic system shows a linear association with ADHD. The limbic system predicts hyperactivity better, while the salient attention system predicts inattention better.

Acute stress promotes brain network integration and reduces state transition variability

Rong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of acute stress on brain networks using whole-brain resting-state functional MRI. The results showed that acute stress induces a more integrated and stable state in brain networks, possibly to cope with stress more efficiently.

Identification of genetic overlap and novel risk loci for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorder

Kevin S. O'Connell et al.

Summary: The study reveals a shared genetic risk between childhood onset attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BD), which may help explain the high comorbidity rates and diagnostic difficulties between the two. By analyzing GWAS data, 19 novel ADHD risk loci and 40 novel BD risk loci were identified, along with five loci jointly associated with ADHD and BD.

These differences could help distinguish the clinical groups and provide new insights into the underlying pathophysiology of BD.

Summary: Studies have found that children with ADHD spend less time in certain states involving default mode network and task-related networks compared to typically developing children, and they switch states more quickly. Additionally, children with ADHD spend more time in a hyperconnected state.

Altered functional activity in bipolar disorder: A comprehensive review from a large-scale network perspective

Sujung Yoon et al.

Summary: This systematic review of recent neuroimaging research on bipolar disorder using a network-based approach revealed disrupted functional activity and connectivity within large-scale brain networks at rest, as well as during cognitive tasks. Changes in intra- and internetwork functional connectivity are associated with clinical symptoms, highlighting the importance of altered connectivity in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder.

Default mode network shows alterations for low-frequency fMRI fluctuations in euthymic bipolar disorder

Marco Marino et al.

Summary: The study found no significant differences in the default mode network regions between euthymic BD patients and healthy controls, but there were significant increases in low-frequency fluctuations and decreases in high-frequency fluctuations in BD patients. Increases in high-frequency spectral content were associated with lower levels of mania and higher levels of anxious symptoms, while increases in lower frequencies were linked to lower depressive symptoms.

Summary: This study successfully predicted trait anxiety in healthy participants using connectome-based predictive modeling, highlighting the important roles of the limbic system and prefrontal cortex in anxiety prediction. The neural model was able to generalize to an independent large sample, showing potential for identifying personality factors at risk for psychopathology.

Computational exploration of dynamic mechanisms of steady state visual evoked potentials at the whole brain level

Ge Zhang et al.

Summary: Research on the dynamic mechanisms of SSVEPs at the whole-brain level was conducted through simulating the rich dynamics of SSVEPs with a large-scale brain model designed with constraints of neuroimaging data acquired from the human brain. By eliciting activity of the occipital areas using an external periodic stimulus, the model successfully replicated both the spatial distributions and response features of SSVEPs observed in experiments. The study found that alpha-band stimulation could evoke stronger SSVEP responses and the brain networks near this frequency-sensitivity range exhibited significant superiority in topological properties.
