Potential inhibition of the harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium (= Margalefidinium) polykrikoides by the intrusion of Changjiang diluted water into Korea coastal waters

Young Kyun Lim et al.

Summary: During the summer monsoon, the Changjiang River discharge enters the Korean coastal waters, resulting in Changjiang diluted water. The harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides causes massive blooms during this period, leading to economic losses. This study suggests that the intrusion strength of Changjiang diluted water plays a crucial role in regulating the scale of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms.

Effects of seawater viscosity and temperature on the movement of the marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum

Abigail S. Tyrell et al.

Summary: It was found that the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum exhibited an additive response to seawater viscosity and temperature changes, with both cold temperature and high viscosity slowing swimming speeds. However, seawater temperature and viscosity did not affect the movement direction or linearity of swimming of the dinoflagellates. This suggests that temperature-related changes in movement may be partially regulated by a mechanical response to viscosity.

Effect of marine heatwaves on bloom formation of the harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides: Two sides of the same coin?

Young Kyun Lim et al.

Summary: The study found that in 2018, high water temperatures and heatwaves in Korean coastal waters led to the bloom of harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides. Early stratification conditions played a critical role in the algae bloom, but maintaining the bloom under high water temperatures had a negative impact.
