Extinction risk assessment of the endemic terrestrial vertebrates in Mexico

Fernando Mayani-Paras et al.

Summary: The increasing number of species at risk raises concerns globally. National species conservation policies are necessary despite the availability of global assessments. In this study, the IUCN Red List and Mexican Norm methods were employed to categorize the risk level of 310 endemic terrestrial vertebrate species at national and ecoregion levels. Species risk assignments were assessed based on ecological niche models and refined extant distributions, resulting in discrepancies between our proposal and the IUCN Red List and Mexican Norm. The study highlights the variation in extinction risk between different ecoregions in Mexico, with some regions facing higher risk. Using species' potential and extant distributions models allows for frequent species assessments and aids in designing conservation programs.

Cumulative habitat loss increases conservation threats on endemic species of terrestrial vertebrates in Mexico

Fernando Mayani-Paras et al.

Summary: Habitat loss is a major threat to biodiversity conservation globally, and cumulative habitat loss can impact species distribution. This study in Mexico found that habitat loss in species extant distributions is related to geographic locations rather than distribution area per se. Assessing extinction risks at a local level is critical for future biodiversity conservation efforts.

Exposure to pesticides in bats

Camila Guimaraes Torquetti et al.

Summary: The study reviewed articles from 1951 to 2020 on bats' exposure to pesticides, finding that most research was concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in the United States, primarily evaluating insectivorous species of the Vespertilionidae family exposed to organochlorine insecticides. However, the effects of pesticides on other guilds and tropical species remain poorly studied.

Value and benefit distribution of pollination services provided by bats in the production of cactus fruits in central Mexico

Constance J. Tremlett et al.

Summary: Researchers quantified the value and benefit distribution of bat pollination in pitaya production in Mexico, finding bats significantly contribute to fruit yield and size, generating economic value for producers. However, commercialization of the industry has led to uneven economic benefits distribution, favoring privileged groups.

Integrating multiple indices of geobiodiversity reveals a series of regional species-rich areas worthy of conservation in the region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Haibin Yu et al.

Summary: This study compared taxonomic, endemic, and phylogenetic diversity for different plant types in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region, revealing a high congruence between species richness and phylogenetic diversity. There were clear patterns associated with contemporary climate and topography, with previously unrecognized species-rich areas identified. These areas, located where nature reserve coverage is lacking, highlight conservation gaps in the regional strategy.

Protected areas in Central Mexico-are they fit in promoting species persistence under climate and land use changes?

Fernando Chacon-Prieto et al.

Summary: Protected areas are commonly used to safeguard biodiversity, yet their effectiveness may be limited, especially in the face of intense climate change dynamics. This study evaluates the effectiveness of protected areas for vertebrate species in Central Mexico and highlights the need for further conservation efforts in certain regions.

High precision implicit function learning for forecasting supercapacitor state of health based on Gaussian process regression

Jiahao Ren et al.

Summary: This study introduces a GPR-implicit function learning algorithm for predicting the state of health (SOH) of supercapacitors, which calculates mean and covariance functions from a preliminary data set instead of screening, effectively reducing prediction errors. By training only 5% of the data to predict the remaining 95% of cycles, this method decreases errors by more than three times compared to previous studies.

Climate warming affects spatio-temporal biodiversity patterns of a highly vulnerable Neotropical avifauna

David A. Prieto-Torres et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of global climate change on the diversity dimensions of bird assemblages in Neotropical seasonally dry forests, finding that climate change led to a reduction in spatial taxonomic richness of birds, as well as a general decrease in alpha phylogenetic and functional diversities. Changes in community composition and biodiversity organization were observed across space and time, with high temperatures and low rainfall being related to spatio-temporal diversities. The results could inform new land-use planning and conservation efforts in the region.
