A neural network-based method for satellite-based mapping of sediment-laden sea ice in the Arctic

Hisatomo Waga et al.

Summary: This study presents a satellite-based approach to quantify the distribution of sediment-laden sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and its marginal seas. The method uses a structural-optical model and a radiative transfer model to examine surface spectra and employs a spectral unmixing algorithm and an artificial neural network to estimate the fractions of sediment-laden ice. The systematic satellite-based monitoring of sediment-laden ice distribution can provide extensive and cost-effective observations to enhance our understanding of sediment transport and biogeochemical cycling.

Anchoring of atmospheric teleconnection patterns by Arctic Sea ice loss and its link to winter cold anomalies in East Asia

Muyuan Li L et al.

Summary: This study examines the physical processes underlying recent winter cold anomalies over East Asia, finding that the cold anomaly is influenced by warming in the North Atlantic, sea ice loss in the Barents-Kara Sea, and atmospheric teleconnection patterns. Furthermore, the role of sea ice loss in the Barents-Kara Sea seems to be crucial in enhancing the cold anomaly over East Asia. The study also highlights the importance of different North Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns in affecting the position of the cold anomaly region.

Evolution of Arctic Ocean surface circulation from 1958 to 2017

Yilin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between Arctic Ocean surface circulation and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) through the analysis of sea level pressure, sea surface height, and sea surface temperature. The results show that the circulation in the Arctic Ocean exhibits a periodic variation with the AO, leading to changes in the direction and amplitude of circulation.

Trends and variability in polar sea ice, global atmospheric circulations, and baroclinicity

Ian Simmonds et al.

Summary: The study reveals a continuous decline in Arctic sea ice and an alternating trend of decrease and rebound in Antarctic sea ice. Global warming is causing changes in the seasonal mean sea level pressure distribution, and baroclinicity is increasing in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, leading to a poleward shift in storm tracks.
