A dataset of winter wheat aboveground biomass in China during 2007-2015 based on data assimilation

Hai Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a process-based crop growth model for winter wheat was calibrated using observations from agricultural meteorological stations and county-level yield statistics. The model was then assimilated with a reprocessed MODIS Leaf Area Index product to derive a 1 km daily aboveground biomass dataset for the main winter wheat producing areas in China from 2007 to 2015. The validation using ground measurements showed good agreement between the derived dataset and field observations. This study is important for regional agricultural production management and yield estimation.

Mapping corn dynamics using limited but representative samples with adaptive strategies

Yanan Wen et al.

Summary: Mapping corn dynamics at a large scale is crucial for global food security. This study developed an efficient approach to map corn dynamics in the main corn districts of the United States using adaptive strategies for collecting high-quality training samples. The proposed approach demonstrated robust classification models with good performance in mapping large-scale corn dynamics.

Assimilating remote sensing-based VPM GPP into the WOFOST model for improving regional winter wheat yield estimation

Wen Zhuo et al.

Summary: Crop growth models are essential for predicting crop growth and yield. By assimilating accumulative GPP estimates from satellite-based vegetation photosynthesis model into WOFOST model, the accuracy of winter wheat yield estimation can be improved significantly.

A 30 m annual maize phenology dataset from 1985 to 2020 in China

Quandi Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, a fine-resolution phenology product of maize in China was generated using Landsat observations, providing accurate information on crop growth phases. The dataset was consistent with in situ observations and MODIS phenology product, and it revealed noticeable changes in maize phenology temporal trends before and after 2000.

Early-Season Mapping of Winter Crops Using Sentinel-2 Optical Imagery

Haifeng Tian et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the potential of using Sentinel-2 data to map winter crops in the early growth stage, demonstrating that winter garlic and winter wheat can be distinguished four months before harvest, while winter canola can be distinguished two months before harvest. With an overall classification accuracy of 96.62%, Sentinel-2 images prove to be an important data source for accurately identifying these winter crops in the field of agricultural remote sensing.
