Techno-Economic Performance of Closed-Loop Geothermal Systems for Heat Production and Electricity Generation

Koenraad F. Beckers et al.

Summary: Closed-loop geothermal systems, also known as advanced geothermal systems (AGS), have the potential to develop geothermal energy independent of site-specific geologic uncertainties and with limited risk of induced seismicity. This study presents a technical and economic analysis of closed-loop geothermal systems under different scenarios, evaluating the influence of various parameters on heat production and cost, including reservoir temperature, well termination depth, mass flow rate, injection temperature, fluid type, design configuration, and degree of reservoir convection.

Comparison of fully-coupled and sequential solution methodologies for enhanced geothermal systems

Bruce Gee et al.

Summary: This study compares monolithic and sequential solution schemes as well as a loosely-coupled scheme for simulating Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) wells in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. Results show that monolithic schemes have optimal convergence rates with respect to mesh and timestep refinement, while sequential solution schemes verify previous modeling efforts.

Multiscale short-circuiting mechanisms in multiple fracture enhanced geothermal systems

Bruce Gee et al.

Summary: The heat extraction from an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is a complex process, with short-circuiting compromising the viability due to positive feedback loops. Through modeling, it is shown that short-circuiting in EGS is a multiscale phenomenon with both in-plane and inter-plane mechanisms. In-plane short-circuiting controls the production temperature, while inter-plane mechanisms impact flow distribution through the reservoir.

Techno-Economic Design of a Combined Heat and Power Microgrid for a Remote Community in Newfoundland Canada

Hashem Elsaraf et al.

Summary: This study focused on analyzing the energy needs of remote communities in Canada, proposing a solution with renewable energy microgrids, and selecting a specific community for design and research. The results showed that this microgrid system can significantly reduce diesel consumption and CO2 emissions, achieve 100% renewable energy for electric load and 63.5% for thermal load, and achieve a Levelized cost of -0.0245 $/kWh.
