Key factors of marine shale conductivity in southern China-Part II: The influence of pore system and the development direction of shale gas saturation models

Linqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the resistivity curve responses of marine shale gas reservoirs, emphasizing the direct impact of pore type on rock resistivity and exploring the relationship between reservoir classification methods and resistivity curves. It also points out that existing saturation models are insufficient for evaluating the saturation of shale gas reservoirs, and subsequent research should consider the characteristics of the rock.

Assessing the influence of isotopic composition of water on that of clay minerals during chemical treatments

I. Campana et al.

Summary: The isotopic composition of water used in pre-treatment solutions has an influence on the isotopic composition of clay minerals. While HCl pre-treatment significantly alters the clay minerals, H2O2 pre-treatment has negligible effects. The variability in the alteration mainly depends on clay mineralogy, especially the quantity of smectite.

Application analysis on the different neutron gamma density (NGD) logging methods

Quanying Zhang et al.

Summary: Neutron gamma density (NGD) logging is a promising alternative to traditional density logging (GGD) in the oil industry for resolving radiation and safety issues. Different NGD methods based on fast neutron, thermal neutron, and capture gamma detection coexist in well-logging with considerable differences in tool specifications. Despite different measurement systems and data processing methods, all three NGD methods can eliminate the HI effect and accurately obtain formation density, but may have significant errors in wellbore size and fluid changes. Countries to other two NGD methods, the NGD-FC method performs well in oil or gas-saturated formations, while NGD-TC and NGD-CC methods have large errors in gas-saturated formations. Additionally, the impact of formation water salinity differs among the NGD methods. This study provides guidance for tool design, data processing, and environmental correction in NGD technology.

Investigation of the Origin of Low Resistivity and Methods for the Calculation of Gas Saturation in Shale Gas Reservoirs in the Fuling Area

Wenrui Shi et al.

Summary: This study established two nonresistivity gas saturation models based on dipole array acoustic/conventional logging parameters and total organic carbon (TOC) to address the issue of inaccurate gas saturation values in low-resistivity shale gas reservoirs in the Fuling area. The models were verified to have higher accuracy than the Archie-type resistivity model and show potential for wider applications.

Rock mechanical characteristics of deep marine shale in southern China, a case study in Dingshan block

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The commercial exploitation of shale gas in China has been successful in middle-shallow layers, but over 65% of shale gas resources are buried in deep formations, which pose challenges due to the deep burial depth. Tri-axial compression tests conducted on core samples from a deep marine shale gas well show that the mechanical characteristics of shale are influenced by buried depth, with the peak deviatoric stress increasing significantly with higher confining pressure. The brittleness index (BI) proposed in the study effectively captures the influence of confining pressure on shale brittleness and distinguishes more brittle layers characterized by step-like post-peak curves.
