Wind flow and sediment flux profiles for vegetated surfaces in a wind tunnel and field-scale windbreak

Abbas Miri et al.

Summary: Wind tunnel observations with live vegetation are rare and seldom combined with field measurements. However, research on wind speed and sediment flux profiles in different vegetation morphology and plant densities showed that profile structures are likely common for homogeneous canopies even with different plant types. The study found that wind tunnel vegetation can significantly reduce wind speed even at low densities, with the sheltered area being greater for a multi-row windbreak than for wind-tunnel canopies.

The effectiveness of a single Tamarix tree in reducing aeolian erosion in an arid region

Abbas Miri et al.

Summary: Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a single Tamarix tree in reducing wind speed and sediment flux, revealing an 80-90% reduction in wind speed and sediment flux at a distance of x/h = 1. The results confirmed the suitability of Tamarix trees as a potential control on erosion and sediment transport, with the most significant reduction observed on the leeside of the tree. Designing a windbreak with an optimum inter-rows distance of x/h = 7 and inter-plant spacing of less than 0.5 h is recommended for maximum control of aeolian erosion.

Characteristics of the flow structures through and around a submerged canopy patch

Mengyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of submerged canopy patches on flow fields and the impact of array density on flow structure and coherent structures. Increasing array density led to a decrease in streamwise bleeding flow and an increase in lateral and vertical bleeding flow, with significant group behavior observed in the array.

A method to select sites for sand and dust storm source mitigation: case study in the Sistan region of southeast Iran

Saeideh Maleki et al.

Summary: This study applies a prioritized site-selection method that considers physical and human variables interacting with sand and dust storms to improve the success of projects combating SDS. With resource and budget constraints, potential stabilization sites for SDS hotspots are identified and prioritized using the multi criteria evaluation method.
