Stabilization of Ferrihydrite and Lepidocrocite by Silicate during Fe(II)-Catalyzed Mineral Transformation: Impact on Particle Morphology and Silicate Distribution

Katrin Schulz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect and fate of silicate during Fe mineral recrystallization and transformation. The results show that the solid phase Si/Fe ratio strongly influences the extent of ferrihydrite transformation, while the Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio has a minor effect. Silicate increases the thickness of lepidocrocite crystallites and inhibits the transformation of lepidocrocite when adsorbed. Silicate is an important factor to consider in understanding Fe mineral dynamics in reducing soil conditions.

Impact of Organic Matter on Microbially-Mediated Reduction and Mobilization of Arsenic and Iron in Arsenic(V)-Bearing Ferrihydrite

Xiaolin Cai et al.

Summary: The presence of polygalacturonic acid and humic acid promoted the reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite, resulting in increased release of arsenic compared to ferrihydrite without organic matter. Arsenic-XAS results showed a higher fraction of solid-phase arsenite in the presence of organic matter.

The Voltaic Effect as a Novel Mechanism Controlling the Remobilization of Cadmium in Paddy Soils during Drainage

Hui Huang et al.

Summary: Excessive cadmium accumulation in rice grain is a global issue affecting human health, with the voltaic effect identified as a novel mechanism controlling Cd remobilization during soil drainage. Metal sulfides with lower electrochemical potential are more prone to oxidative dissolution, while those with higher potential are protected from oxidation. The voltaic effect plays an important role in the oxidative dissolution of sulfides in trace metals coupled with the sulfur redox cycle in periodically anoxic-oxic environments.

From Adsorption to Precipitation of U(VI): What is the Role of pH and Natural Organic Matter?

Carmen A. Velasco et al.

Summary: The study found that natural organic matter (NOM) promotes the precipitation of U(VI) at low pH, which could be relevant to the formation of mineral deposits, radioactive waste repositories, wetlands, and other U- and organic-rich environmental systems. Adsorption and precipitation of U(VI) in the presence of NOM occur at pH 2 and pH 4, while aqueous complexation of U by dissolved organic matter is favored at pH 7, preventing its precipitation. Spectroscopic analyses showed that U(VI) is mainly adsorbed to particulate organic matter at pH 4, but electron microscopy identified U(VI)-bearing ultrafine to nanocrystalline solids at pH 4.

Ning Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of organic matter have varying impacts on the sequestration of chromium in Fe/Cr-OM ternary systems and the stability of coprecipitates. Some organic matter exhibits strong complexation capabilities with Fe/Cr ions and Fe/Cr hydroxide particles, leading to structural disorder and fast aggregation of the coprecipitates.

Selective retention of extracellular polymeric substances induced by adsorption to and coprecipitation with ferrihydrite

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that microbially-derived compounds, particularly extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), play a significant role in the soil organic matter pool. The interaction between EPS and soil minerals affects the sorption and selective retention of EPS constituents. The study investigates the EPS association pathways with ferrihydrite and their impact on the mobility and fate of microbially-derived organic matter in soil environments.

Fulvic Acid-Mediated Interfacial Reactions on Exposed Hematite Facets during Dissimilatory Iron Reduction

Shiwen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fulvic acid (FA) on the dissimilatory reduction of hematite {001} and {100} by Shewanella putrefaciens CN-32. The results showed that FA accelerated the bioreduction rates of hematite {001} and {100}, with {100} having a lower rate than {001}. Spectroscopic and mass spectrometry analyses suggested that organic compounds with specific characteristics were easily adsorbed on Fe oxides or decomposed by bacteria. The Tafel curves indicated that hematite {100} exhibited higher resistance during electron transfer compared to hematite {001}, due to differences in their electrochemical activities.

Organic Matter from Redoximorphic Soils Accelerates and Sustains Microbial Fe(III) Reduction

Andreas Fritzsche et al.

Summary: In redoximorphic soils, microbial reduction of iron (III) minerals is significantly influenced by organic matter, which can either decelerate or accelerate the reduction rate. The organic matter released by microbial activity under anaerobic conditions (efOM) plays a key role in affecting the electron uptake and crystallinity of iron (III) minerals. The presence of efOM, whether adsorbed or coprecipitated, leads to distinct effects on microbial reduction of iron (III) minerals by affecting the surface passivation and altering the mineral structure.

Co-precipitation induces changes to iron and carbon chemistry and spatial distribution at the nanometer scale

Angela R. Possinger et al.

Summary: The association of organic matter with mineral phases through co-precipitation is expected to be a common process in environments with high organic matter input and frequent mineral dissolution and re-precipitation. The study reveals that co-precipitation can lead to greater carbon accumulation and may cause spatial separation and transformation of both iron and carbon forms. Additionally, abiotic redox reactions between iron and carbon via substituted aromatic groups play a role in creating distinct co-precipitate composition, potentially impacting its mineralization.

The structure of natural biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides formed in circumneutral pH environments

Andrew H. Whitaker et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure of biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides and found that they are structurally distinct and more disordered than two-line ferrihydrite (2LFh). The poorly ordered biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides were intimately mixed with organic matter and exhibited reduced crystallinity compared to 2LFh. Factors such as domain size and incorporation of impurities contributed to the differences in structure between biogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides and 2LFh.
