Establishment of five new genera in the family Geminiviridae: Citlodavirus, Maldovirus, Mulcrilevirus, Opunvirus, and Topilevirus

Philippe Roumagnac et al.

Summary: Geminiviruses are plant-infecting, circular single-stranded DNA viruses with geminate virion morphology. With a wide geographical distribution, these viruses infect both cultivated and non-cultivated monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. As of 2020, nine genera have been established within the family Geminiviridae, with recent metagenomics approaches leading to the discovery of numerous highly divergent geminiviruses. Additionally, the establishment of five new genera in the family Geminiviridae has formally classified twelve new, divergent geminiviruses.

Petabase-scale sequence alignment catalyses viral discovery

Robert C. Edgar et al.

Summary: Public databases contain a vast amount of nucleic acid sequences, but efficient methods for systematic exploration of this library have been lacking. In this study, we developed a cloud computing infrastructure, Serratus, to enable ultra-high-throughput sequence alignment at the petabase scale. By searching millions of diverse samples, we identified over 10(5) novel RNA viruses and characterized their environmental reservoirs. To facilitate viral discovery, we established a comprehensive database of these data and tools. Expanding the known sequence diversity of viruses has important implications for understanding emerging pathogens and improving pathogen surveillance.

Welwitschia: Phylogeography of a living fossil, diversified within a desert refuge

Norbert Juergens et al.

Summary: Welwitschia mirabilis, a unique plant species, is found in northern Namib Desert in Angola and Namibia, with high genetic divergence and possibly two subspecies. The study reveals the presence of multiple unique gene pools within the species, indicating the evolution of diversity within the refuge of the northern Namib Desert.

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Geminiviridae 2021

Elvira Fiallo-Olive et al.

Summary: The family Geminiviridae consists of viruses with single-stranded, circular DNA genomes of 2.5-5.2 kb, causing economically significant diseases mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. They infect dicot and monocot plants and are transmitted by insect vectors. Some geminiviruses are associated with DNA satellites.

Climate change effects on desert ecosystems: A case study on the keystone species of the Namib Desert Welwitschia mirabilis

Pierluigi Bombi et al.

Summary: Deserts are predicted to be highly responsive to global climate change, and this study focuses on the spatial and demographic responses of the keystone endemic plant in the Namib Desert, the Welwitschia mirabilis. The research shows that the historically realized thermal niche of the plant will be almost completely unavailable in the next 30 years in northern Namibia, and reductions in climatic suitability are strongly associated with negative population conditions. This makes Welwitschia a suitable bioindicator for climate change effects in Namib Desert ecosystems.

Perspective on taxonomic classification of uncultivated viruses

Bas E. Dutilh et al.

Summary: The development of virus taxonomy relies on advances in metagenomic analysis and other technologies, which have brought a wealth of previously unknown virus sequence data and provided unprecedented insights into the vastness of the virosphere. Properly classifying viruses is crucial to understanding the diversity of viruses, and the inclusion of uncultivated viruses has already improved this process.

Both Conifer II and Gnetales are characterized by a high frequency of ancient mitochondrial gene transfer to the nuclear genome

Sheng-Long Kan et al.

Summary: The study on mitochondrial gene transfer/loss in gymnosperms reveals significant variations in gene content among different families, with missing genes observed in some families such as Conifer II and Gnetales. Additionally, the research suggests a two-step transfer mechanism for mitochondrial gene transfer in Conifer II and Gnetales. These findings provide insights into the evolutionary scenario of mitochondrial gene transfer in gymnosperms and factors affecting gene content variation in land plants.

Discovery of putative novel viruses in the transcriptomes of endangered plant species native to India and China

V. Kavi Sidharthan et al.

Summary: Using a combination of bioinformatic analyses and Next Generation Sequencing, nine putative novel viruses were discovered in public domain transcriptome datasets of endangered plant species. This methodology can be useful for identifying new viruses in plant species with limited genomic information.
