Highly monodisperse sub-nanometer and nanometer Ru particles confined in alkali-exchanged zeolite Y for ammonia decomposition

Junyoung Cha et al.

Summary: The study investigated the preparation method and catalytic performance of nanometer-sized Ru particles deposited on four different alkali-exchanged zeolite Y supports. The results showed that Ru/Rb-Y exhibited the highest catalytic activity, mainly attributed to the high basicity of Rb-Y zeolite and the confined dispersion of Ru particles, which led to an open pore structure of the zeolite.

Summary: Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a clean fuel due to its zero-carbon characteristics and high hydrogen content. Research has shown that Ni-based catalysts are considered more cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to Ru-based catalysts for ammonia decomposition. Additionally, feeding SOFCs with pre-decomposed ammonia has been identified as a promising method to mitigate anode degradation and improve cell stability.

The dispersed SiO2 microspheres supported Ru catalyst with enhanced activity for ammonia decomposition

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: The Ru nanoparticles supported on SiO2 microspheres prepared by the glucose-urea-metallic salt method showed higher catalytic activity in the decomposition of ammonia compared to catalysts prepared with the impregnation method. The addition of either K or Cs further enhanced the catalytic performance, with the strongest promotion effect observed when the ratio of K/Cs to Ru is 2. The promotion effects and mechanisms of K and Cs were found to be different based on various characterization techniques such as H-2-TPR, XPS, and NH3-TPSR.

Ru-Based Catalysts for Ammonia Decomposition: A Mini-Review

Chongqi Chen et al.

Summary: Ammonia with a hydrogen content of 17.6 wt % is considered a promising hydrogen carrier with established infrastructures for production, storage, and transportation. Various metal-based catalysts, especially Ru-based ones, have been developed for NH3 decomposition, aiming to improve performance by reducing Ru loading and reaction temperature. Research focuses on support materials such as carbon (CNTs, CNFs, graphene) and metal oxides (Al2O3, MgO, SiO2) to understand the relationship between catalytic performance and structure.

Electrochemical activation of Ru catalyst with alkaline ion conductors for the catalytic decomposition of ammonia

M. Pinzon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the electrochemical activation of ruthenium catalyst film with alkaline ion conductors for hydrogen production via catalytic decomposition of ammonia. The addition of moderate amounts of alkaline ions (Na+ and K+) from the solid electrolyte support to the ruthenium catalyst film activated the hydrogen production rate. Among the two alkali ions, potassium had a stronger effect, increasing the hydrogen production rate by over 230% under optimal conditions at 300 degrees C. Temperature programmed reaction experiments also confirmed the advantages of EPOC for catalyst activation at low temperatures.
