The prediction of organic-rich reservoir facies within the Late Pennsylvanian Cline shale (also known as Wolfcamp D), Midland Basin, Texas

Stacy C. Atchley et al.

Summary: The Permian Basin in the southwestern United States has historically produced a significant amount of oil, but recent success in unconventional shale reservoirs has increased its potential for oil recovery. The Cline shale, a key reservoir in the area, has high oil-in-place estimates and plays a crucial role in influencing reservoir quality.

Experimental determination of porosity and methane sorption capacity of organic-rich shales as a function of effective stress: Implications for gas storage capacity

Garri Gaus et al.

Summary: Experimental results showed that increasing overburden stress significantly reduced both specific pore volume and excess sorption capacity. The stress sensitivity was most prominent in the total organic carbon (TOC)-rich Kimmeridge sample and decreased in the order of Bossier, Eagle Ford, and Alum. The stress dependence of the methane excess sorption capacity decreased in the order of Eagle Ford, Bossier, Kimmeridge, and Alum.

New Insights into Controlling Factors of Pore Evolution in Organic-rich Shale

Jiale Xu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the pore evolution of organic-rich shales from the Permian Lucaogou Formation in Junggar Basin, China. The research identified 18 nanometers as the critical pore size boundary that connected different stages of pore evolution, and revealed that different pore size ranges were controlled by different diagenesis processes. The study also showed a three-phase pattern of pore evolution as thermal maturity increases, with different correlations between pore evolution and organic matter maturity in specific pore size ranges.

Quantifying multiple source rock contributions to petroleum fluids: Bias in using compound ratios and neglecting the gas fraction

Andrew P. Murray et al.

Summary: The study found that using biomarker concentrations combined with chemometric analysis can determine the relative contributions of each end member in petroleum mixtures, while traditional methods may underestimate the contributions of gas condensate or oil sources with higher gas-liquid ratios. Errors in genetic classification may occur during mixture deconvolution, and accurate identification of contributions to mixtures can improve understanding of petroleum systems.

Paleoenvironment and chemostratigraphy heterogenity of the Cretaceous organic-rich shales

Modi Guan et al.

Summary: The research indicates that the Qingshankou Formation was deposited in a fresh water-brackish water, semideep/deep water, and strongly reducing environment. Paleosalinity was positively correlated with total organic carbon, residual hydrocarbon, and carbonate mineral content, with pores predominantly consisting of intra-illite pores, intraI/S mixed-layer pores, and intra-pyrite pores.

Sun Longde et al.

Summary: The study focused on the characteristics and issues of Gulong shale oil, proposing main results in terms of organic matter source, reservoir characteristics, and mineral evolution. Three key research suggestions were put forward to achieve economic utilization of Gulong shale oil.

Differences in source kitchens for lacustrine in-source and out-of-source hydrocarbon accumulations

Zhao Wenzhi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the differences in source kitchens for the formation of conventional and shale oils, including processes of hydrocarbon enrichment, TOC thresholds, and optimal windows. Conventional oil pools are mainly formed outside the source kitchens, while shale oil pools are mainly formed inside the source rocks, requiring better quality and larger scale of source rocks.
