A review on biofuels for light-duty vehicles in Europe

S. Puricelli et al.

Summary: The European transport sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and biofuels are being explored as a way to reduce these emissions. In 2017, biofuels accounted for 4.5% of energy consumption in road transport and non-road mobile machinery, with biodiesel being the most consumed biofuel at 62% in the EU. Several studies have shown that biofuels generally have lower climate change impacts compared to diesel and petrol, with different types of biofuels offering varying levels of emission savings. Land use change effects are an important consideration, with the need to focus on non-edible feedstocks, waste, and by-products to minimize risks associated with land use change. European legislation is also working towards promoting the use of these more sustainable biofuel sources.

Development perspectives of promising lignocellulose feedstocks for production of advanced generation biofuels: A review

Cherng-Yuan Lin et al.

Summary: Biofuels are environmentally friendly, renewable, and have a low carbon footprint. Developing advanced generation biofuels requires consideration of feedstock sources and production technologies, as well as sustainability criteria and certification. Microalgae and cyanobacteria are considered the most promising feedstock sources.

Discreteness and integrality in Conformal Field Theory

Justin Kaidi et al.

Summary: In this study, constraints of positivity, discreteness, and integrality on observables in compact CFTs are systematically investigated. The results yield bootstrap-type bounds on OPE data, insights into spectral determinacy, and discussions on implications for black hole physics and the uniqueness of a possible ensemble interpretation of AdS(3) gravity.

Decarbonising ships, planes and trucks: An analysis of suitable low-carbon fuels for the maritime, aviation and haulage sectors

Nathan Gray et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the shipping, aviation and haulage sectors and a range of low-carbon energy carriers that can be used to decarbonise them, highlighting the potential of biomethane and hydrogen as alternatives to diesel. Energy density issues preclude the use of batteries in shipping, leading to a focus on energy dense liquids or compressed gaseous fuels like methanol. Regulations and aircraft design mean that commercial aviation is dependant on drop-in jet fuels, with power-to-liquid fuels being deemed the most suitable option.
