A novel analysis of n-butanol-gasoline blends impact on spark ignition engine characteristics and lubricant oil degradation

Syed Khizar Asrar Hussain et al.

Summary: Butanol, as a potential biofuel, has been extensively studied for its impact on engine performance and emissions. However, there is a research gap regarding its effect on lubricating oil deterioration. In this study, n-butanol-gasoline blends were tested and compared with pure gasoline. It was found that increasing the ratio of butanol in the fuel blend resulted in improved engine performance and higher exhaust gas temperature. CO and HC emissions were the lowest in the case of a higher butanol concentration. The study also revealed that the lubricating oil properties were affected, indicating a need for advanced lubricants to accommodate alternative fuels.

Investigation of the effect of boron additive to lubricating oil on engine performance, exhaust, and emissions

T. Akbiyik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of adding doped boron to lubricating oil on engine performance and emissions when using gasoline and natural gas as fuel in a spark ignition engine. Results showed that using boron-doped lubricating oil led to a 2.4-8% reduction in specific fuel consumption, with a significant decrease in NOX emissions by 11.4-12.9%. This suggests that adding boron to the lubricating oil in a gasoline engine can improve engine performance and emissions.

Motor oil degradation during urban cycle road tests

Lei Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variations in oil properties after servicing at 5,000 km for civilian vehicles in China operating in urban traffic conditions. The results showed that the total acid number (TAN) of oils increased with the operation mileage, while the total base number (TBN) decreased after road tests. The kinematic viscosity (KV) decreased initially, stabilized, and then increased later, with all values of oxidation onset temperature (OOT) higher than 210 degrees C.

Impact of a novel fuel additive containing boron and hydrogen on diesel engine performance and emissions

Suleyman Simsek et al.

Summary: In this study, diesel fuel was enriched with hydrogen and boron to create a special fuel additive, octamix, which showed improvements in brake thermal efficiency and reductions in brake-specific fuel consumption. The addition of 1% octamix resulted in the highest BTE and lowest BSFC, while also decreasing emissions of NOx, CO, CO2, HC, and smoke compared to conventional diesel fuel.

Mindaugas Melaika et al.

Summary: The study investigated the performance of gaseous fuels in a spark ignition engine, showing that they can improve engine efficiency, reduce emissions, and provide stable combustion. The results indicated that DI-CNG combustion had the best performance among different injection systems, with lower particulate emissions.

Comprehensive assessment of oil degradation patterns in petrol and diesel engines observed in a field test with passenger cars-Conventional oil analysis and fuel dilution

Adam Agocs et al.

Summary: Modern internal combustion engines require lower emissions, higher power density, and longer maintenance intervals. A field study on petrol and diesel vehicles found that long-range petrol vehicles displayed accelerated oil degradation compared to diesel vehicles, while short-range petrol vehicles showed even faster oil degradation and changes in viscosity due to fuel dilution. Diesel vehicles exhibited higher soot loading and more pronounced engine wear.
