Characterization of gut microbiota, metabolism and cytokines in benzene-induced hematopoietic damage

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified critical characteristics of gut microbiota, metabolism and cytokines involved in benzene-induced hematopoietic toxicity. The decline in hematopoietic stem cells occurred earlier than hematological changes in mice exposed to benzene, with disrupted homeostasis of gut microbiota, metabolism and cytokine. Additionally, specific bacteria, metabolites and cytokines were associated with benzene-induced hematopoietic damage, indicating potential mechanisms for further exploration.

The vascular niche controls Drosophila hematopoiesis via fibroblast growth factor signaling

Manon Destalminil-Letourneau et al.

Summary: In adult mammals, hematopoiesis is tightly regulated by signals from the microenvironment called niche. The vascular system acts as a second niche to control lymph gland homeostasis by regulating intracellular calcium levels through the FGF signaling pathway. This study shows that two niches contribute to the control of Drosophila blood cell homeostasis through differential regulation of progenitors.

Paths and pathways that generate cell-type heterogeneity and developmental progression in hematopoiesis

Juliet R. Girard et al.

Summary: The study identified new blood cell subpopulations in Drosophila lymph gland and revealed key developmental pathways and signaling cascades, highlighting the role of metabolism in development. It was found that graded expression of specific genes and alternative isoforms play significant roles in cell differentiation and fate determination prior to making fate choices. This combinatorial expression model reflects a smooth transition pattern in hematopoiesis, gaining support in mammalian studies.

Dual oxidase-dependent reactive oxygen species are involved in the regulation of UGT overexpression-mediated clothianidin resistance in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

Yunhua Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that Duox-dependent ROS is involved in regulating UGT expression-mediated insecticide resistance in the brown planthopper. Overexpression of NlUGT386F2 contributed to resistance to clothianidin, while inhibition of ROS decreased UGT expression and increased susceptibility to the insecticide. Silencing Duox increased susceptibility to clothianidin by down-regulating UGT expression.

Drosophila as a Model to Study Cellular Communication Between the Hematopoietic Niche and Blood Progenitors Under Homeostatic Conditions and in Response to an Immune Stress

Ismael Morin-Poulard et al.

Summary: In adult mammals, blood cells are formed from hematopoietic stem progenitor cells, which are controlled by a complex cellular microenvironment called niche. Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model organism to decipher the mechanisms controlling hematopoiesis, due to its limited number of blood cell lineages and the conservation of genes and signaling pathways throughout bilaterian evolution. Hematopoiesis in Drosophila occurs in two waves – during embryogenesis and at larval stages, regulated by distinct niches in different hematopoietic sites.
