Summary: The genus name Synedra should be used only for marine species previously included in Catacombas, with the latter becoming a junior synonym. Two suggestions are made to deal with the issue of numerous names remaining in Synedra that do not belong there: explore existing names and data, or treat it as a scientific problem of taxon relationships at various levels in the taxonomic hierarchy. Monophyletic classifications supported by evidence provide a more scientific approach to understanding relationships among species groups.

Fragilaria subrecapitellata (Fragilariaceae, Bacillariophyta), a new diatom species from Switzerland

Summary: During a biomonitoring assignment in the Swiss canton Ticino, an unidentified Fragilaria taxon was discovered and later separated as a new species Fragilaria subrecapitellata sp. nov. This new species can be distinguished from F. recapitellata by its valve outline shape and size. The correct name for the taxon generally known as F. candidagilae or F. capucina var. capitellata has been determined through distribution and iconography analysis of literature data, appointing it as Fragilaria deformis.
