Strategies for studying in vivo biochemical formation pathways and multilevel distributions of quality or function-related specialized metabolites in tea (Camellia sinensis)

Yinyin Liao et al.

Summary: The formation pathways and distributions of specialized metabolites in tea are important for improving tea quality. Stable isotope-labeled precursor tracing is a strategy to study the formation of tea metabolites at the individual plant level. Imaging mass spectrometry can be used to investigate the in situ localization of metabolites within tea tissue. Nonaqueous fractionation is a feasible method for characterizing the distributions of metabolites in subcellular organs.

How does tea (Camellia sinensis) produce specialized metabolites which determine its unique quality and function: a review

Yinyin Liao et al.

Summary: Tea, as both a plant and food, contains bioactive compounds that are essential to its quality and functional properties. The unique secondary metabolites in tea are mainly produced in the leaves during plant growth. Understanding the formation of these metabolites is crucial. This review compares the metabolites in tea, coffee, cocoa, and grape and summarizes the research progress on the formation of characteristic secondary metabolites in tea.

Metabolites and Transcriptional Profiling Analysis Reveal the Molecular Mechanisms of the Anthocyanin Metabolism in the Zijuan Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis var. assamica)

Yu Mei et al.

Summary: Anthocyanins are natural colorants with antioxidant and health-promoting properties, and their synthesis mechanism in Zijuan tea has been studied. This research compared Zijuan with Yunkang 10 for gene and metabolite analysis, revealing differences in anthocyanin accumulation and regulation between the two varieties. The study sheds light on the molecular regulation of anthocyanin balance in tea plants.

A phased genome based on single sperm sequencing reveals crossover pattern and complex relatedness in tea plants

Weiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The phased genome of Camellia sinensis was constructed by sequencing 135 single sperm cells of the elite tea cultivar 'Fudingdabai', revealing high-resolution genetic and recombination maps. The study identified low crossover frequency in tea due to strong interferences, while complex kinship and genetic signatures were detected among 106 tea accessions. Furthermore, allele-specific gene expression patterns and differential expression levels were observed between different haplotypes of tea plants.

Transcriptional analysis reveals key insights into seasonal induced anthocyanin degradation and leaf color transition in purple tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze)

Tony Kipkoech Maritim et al.

Summary: Purple-tea, a cultivar rich in anthocyanins, has varying levels of pigmentation and anthocyanin content depending on the season, with the main flush showing the highest accumulation. This study provides insights into the transcriptional regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis and degradation, aiding in the development of seasonal-independent anthocyanin-rich tea cultivars through genetic engineering.

Integrated Metabolome and Transcriptome Analyses Reveal Etiolation-Induced Metabolic Changes Leading to High Amino Acid Contents in a Light-Sensitive Japanese Albino Tea Cultivar

Hiroto Yamashita et al.

Summary: Plant albinism results in pale leaves and higher FAA contents in albino tea leaves. Metabolic changes in etiolated leaves (EL) are influenced by etiolation itself rather than light environment. The high FAA contents in EL may result from increased nitrogen source contributed by protein degradation.
