Model of Fungal Development in Stored Barley Ecosystems as a Prognostic Auxiliary Tool for Postharvest Preservation Systems

Jolanta Wawrzyniak

Summary: A modeling approach was developed to describe total fungal growth in barley ecosystems stored at different temperatures and water activities, showing good precision and high prediction accuracy. The formulated model can estimate fungal contamination in a bulk of grain versus time by monitoring temperature and intergranular relative humidity as prognostic support in modern postharvest management systems.

Detoxification of aflatoxins in foods by ultraviolet irradiation, hydrogen peroxide, and their combination - A review

Ming-Hsun Shen et al.

Summary: Aflatoxins contamination in foods is common worldwide, and studies have shown that technologies like UV and H2O2 can effectively detoxify these toxins. UV is able to detoxify with minimal quality impact, while H2O2 can oxidize toxins with little to no residual issues after treatment.

Mycotoxins Biocontrol Methods for Healthier Crops and Stored Products

Kristina Habschied et al.

Summary: Contamination of crops by phytopathogenic fungi leads to mycotoxin production, often requiring the use of antifungal substances which can be harmful to human health. Researchers are seeking more eco-friendly and healthier biological alternatives to synthetic antifungal compounds for crop protection.

Maize food chain and mycotoxins: A review on occurrence studies

Marta Leite et al.

Summary: This review examines the occurrence of regulated, masked, and emerging mycotoxins in the maize food chain from 2005 to 2020, highlighting deoxynivalenol and zearalenone as the most prevalent mycotoxins. Aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone are main contaminants in maize silage, while fumonisins have the highest levels in maize grains for feed or food. Emerging mycotoxins are also found throughout the feed and food chain, with frequent co-contamination patterns.
