PBDEs in the marine environment: Sources, pathways and the role of microplastics

Andrew Turner

Summary: This article evaluates and quantifies the sources and pathways of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the ocean, with a particular focus on the migration from plastics and contaminated plastics themselves. The calculations based on measurements suggest that a substantial amount of PBDEs is deposited in the ocean annually, mainly through aerosols and air-water gas exchange. The input of PBDEs from plastic products and marine plastic litter is estimated to be significant, but it is expected to decrease in the next two decades due to the reduced production and recycling of these chemicals. The study also highlights the potential enhanced migration of PBDEs when weathered microplastics are exposed to fish and seabirds' oily digestive fluids.

Formal waste treatment facilities as a source of halogenated flame retardants and organophosphate esters to the environment: A critical review with particular focus on outdoor air and soil

Yulong Ma et al.

Summary: The extensive use of HFRs and OPEs has raised concerns about their adverse effects on the environment, ecology, and human health. Emissions of these chemicals occur through mechanisms such as volatilization, abrasion, and leaching, with potential impacts on outdoor air and soil in the vicinity of waste treatment facilities. Improper waste management may contribute to contamination of HFRs and OPEs in ambient air.

Emerging and legacy flame retardants in indoor air and dust samples of Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain)

Roser Esplugas et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of both legacy and novel flame retardants in indoor environments in Tarragona Province, Spain, with some OPFRs showing high levels. Schools had lower levels of novel FRs, while air concentrations of HFRs were significantly higher in home samples, and dust levels of HFRs were significantly lower in office samples.

Estimation of dietary intake and sources of organohalogenated contaminants among infants: 24-h duplicate diet survey in Fukuoka, Japan

Yukiko Fujii et al.

Summary: The study measured the levels of selected organohalogenated contaminants in complete meal sets of Japanese infants and found that DDTs and PCBs were the highest among the POP groups. The intake of these pollutants mainly came from food, with seafood and seaweed consumption showing correlations with certain contaminants. Seaweed was identified as a potential exposure source of TBP, based on analysis of seaweed samples and dietary intake data.

A comprehensive assessment of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in an Indian food basket: Levels, dietary intakes, and comparison with

Summary: The study found that EDC contamination in food supplied to markets in Delhi was higher than in Dehradun. Despite lax compliance and control measures in India, dietary exposure to OCPs and PBDEs was comparable to Europe, while exposure to PCBs and dioxins was lower. This suggests that internationally harmonized policies on EDC content in food can lead to better protection of health in both developed and developing countries.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in food and human dietary intake: An update of the scientific literature

Neus Gonzalez et al.

Summary: It is established that dietary intake is the main route of human exposure to PCDD/Fs for non-occupationally exposed populations. Recent studies have focused on determining levels of PCDD/Fs in food samples of different origins and their dietary intake. Reductions in environmental emissions of PCDD/Fs have led to decreases in both food samples and biological tissues. Overall, current data shows that tolerable daily/weekly/monthly dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs are not being exceeded.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDD), dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs), and emerging brominated flame retardants (EBFRs) in foods: The levels, profiles, and dietary intake in Latvia

D. Zacs et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the Latvian population's exposure to various brominated flame retardants through food consumption. While HBCDD was the primary exposure substance, PBDEs, DRCs, and EBFRs also contributed to intake. Risk assessment based on EFSA's approach indicated that the estimated dietary exposures are unlikely to have significant health concerns for the Latvian population.

BFRs (PBDEs and HBCDs) in freshwater species from Lake Trasimeno (Italy): The singular case of HBCDs in red swamp crayfish

Tamara Tavoloni et al.

Summary: This study analyzed samples from five different species collected from Lake Trasimeno in Italy to assess PBDEs and HBCDs contamination. Results showed that the levels of BFRs in crucian carp, tench, and European perch were negligible, while red swamp crayfish exhibited high HBCDs levels with a unique contamination pattern. Interestingly, a significant correlation was found between contamination level and seasonal cycle in male crayfish only.

Marilia Cristina Oliveira Souza et al.

Summary: The study determined the levels of seven PBDE congeners in Brazilian food of animal origin, finding that the levels of PBDEs in milk samples were higher than those in studies from other countries, with milk products contributing more to PBDE exposure. The hazard index was found to be less than 1, indicating a relatively low risk of exposure to PBDEs.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Rui Hou et al.

Summary: Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are emerging as alternative flame retardants to legacy compounds, with concerns raised over their presence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risks in aquatic environments. NBFRs show source-dependent distribution, high bioaccumulative properties, resistance to degradation processes, and sorption to sludge and sediments in aquatic environments. Ecological risk assessments have suggested potential risks of NBFRs primarily in source areas. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps in monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments.
