Effects of soil compaction on grain yield of wheat depend on weather conditions

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The use of heavy farm machinery has led to widespread soil compaction, affecting the growth and grain yield of spring wheat under different weather conditions. Higher early vigor may be associated with reduced grain yield, highlighting the importance of considering the interactive effects of soil physical and weather conditions when evaluating the impact of soil compaction on crop growth and productivity.

Shoot and Root Traits Underlying Genotypic Variation in Early Vigor and Nutrient Accumulation in Spring Wheat Grown in High-Latitude Light Conditions

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify candidate traits for pre-breeding in spring wheat to improve nutrient accumulation and early vigor at high latitudes. Whole-plant relative growth rate was found to be correlated with leaf area productivity and plant nitrogen productivity, while total leaf area was suggested as a candidate trait for improved nutrient accumulation and early vigor. Different root system traits were identified as relevant for the accumulation of different nutrients, highlighting the importance of specific root traits in wheat breeding for improved nutrient uptake.

Evidence for magnesium-phosphorus synergism and co-limitation of grain yield in wheat agriculture

Martin Weih et al.

Summary: The study reveals that high nitrogen and phosphorus application significantly affect the growth and grain yield of wheat crops, and the ratio of magnesium to phosphorus has a significant impact on nitrogen conversion efficiency and grain yield. Replacing critical concentrations of single nutrients with nutrient ratios in practical production can enhance crop yields and management efficiency.

Nodal root diameter and node number in maize (Zea mays L.) interact to influence plant growth under nitrogen stress

Hannah M. Schneider et al.

Summary: Under nitrogen limitation, plants allocate more resources to root growth relative to shoot growth. Genotypes with fewer, thick nodal roots in maize are able to better capture deep soil nitrogen and perform better under nitrogen stress. This suggests that synergistic interactions between root architectural and anatomical traits may provide an important strategy for nitrogen acquisition in plants.
