The Role of the Non-Collagenous Extracellular Matrix in Tendon and Ligament Mechanical Behavior: A Review

Lainie E. Eisner et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the contribution of non-collagenous ECM to tendon and ligament mechanics and highlights the knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in future studies. It discusses the role of non-collagenous ECM in the quasi-static and viscoelastic behavior of tendons and ligaments under tension, compression, and shear, with insights from theoretical mechanics and biology.

The role of loading in murine models of rotator cuff disease

Adam C. Abraham et al.

Summary: Analysis of different load-dependent rotator cuff tendinopathy models revealed that underuse and destabilization resulted in changes in forepaw weight-bearing, decreased tendon-to-bone attachment strength, and reduced tendon strength, while overuse activity caused alterations in walking patterns, increased tendon stiffness, and suppression of wound healing-related gene expression.

Summary: This review discusses the potential role of osteocytes in bone mass and osteoclastic activities changes under unloading conditions, as well as the research models available in space missions or in simulated microgravity conditions on Earth. Furthermore, the article also highlights the potential issues that may occur in space conditions, such as fluid flow and shear stress changes.

Rotator cuff anchor repair: Histological changes associated with the recovering mechanical properties in a rabbit model

T. Mark Campbell et al.

Summary: The study on post-repair histological and cellular responses at the tendon-bone attachment site revealed an initial increase in fibrocartilage staining and chondrocyte number during the first 2 weeks of enthesis formation, followed by a plateau in fibrocartilage staining and decrease in chondrocyte number between 2 and 4 weeks post-repair. The presence of nonchondrocytes remained stable initially but decreased abruptly at 2 weeks. Fibrocartilage staining area showed a linear correlation with load to failure and stiffness, while nonchondrocyte number negatively correlated with stiffness.

Negative impact of disuse and unloading on tendon enthesis structure and function

S. Roffino et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the effects of chronic skeletal muscle disuse and unloading on muscle deconditioning, bone remodeling, and tendon enthesis. It explores the relationship between enthesis structure and mechanical stress, as well as the potential impact of spaceflight-induced enthesis remodeling on compressive strength and the risk of developing enthesopathies.
