Influence of individual versus collaborative peer assessment on score accuracy and learning outcomes in higher education: an empirical study

Juan Ramon Rico-Juan et al.

Summary: The study found that collaborative peer assessment significantly improved students' self-assessment accuracy, while peer assessment scores were more accurate and improved with the number of assessments received. Instructors need to balance between students' improved understanding and time constraints when deciding on the design of assessment activities.

From Critique to Computational Thinking: A Peer-Assessment-Supported Problem Identification, Flow Definition, Coding, and Testing Approach for Computer Programming Instruction

Jian-Wen Fang et al.

Summary: Computational thinking is considered as one of the essential skills in the 21st century and computer programming courses are seen as a potential way to develop students' computational thinking. However, traditional instruction methods may lead to students focusing more on learning programming syntax rather than problem-solving concepts. This study introduces a peer-assessment-supported approach that enhances students' computer programming knowledge and computational thinking awareness.

Evaluation of white-box versus black-box machine learning models in estimating ambient black carbon concentration

Pak L. Fung et al.

Summary: The study suggests that white-box models are preferred over black-box models in estimating black carbon due to their proximity to physics-based models and ease of determining the importance of predictor variables. In the future, the black carbon model could serve as a virtual sensor integrated into the air quality network, supporting real-time measurements and complementing the current air quality index.

The effects of trait anxiety and the big five personality traits on self-driving car acceptance

Weina Qu et al.

Summary: The study found that trait anxiety positively affected perceived automation reliability, openness and extraversion had positive effects on self-driving car acceptance, while neuroticism had a negative impact. Individuals high in agreeableness had a more positive view on the benefits of self-driving cars, but were more concerned about ease of use and automation reliability.

Learning analytics on structured and unstructured heterogeneous data sources: Perspectives from procrastination, help-seeking, and machine-learning defined cognitive engagement

Jiun-Yu Wu

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of students' demographic backgrounds, motivational measures, and ill-structured data on their statistics learning performance using the PLE pedagogical design. The results indicated that help-seeking positively predicted statistics achievement, while academic procrastination with ICT negatively predicted statistics achievement. The ensemble ML classified messages aligned with human-coded relevance coding and were positively associated with statistics achievement.

Effect sizes and research directions of peer assessments: From an integrated perspective of meta-analysis and co-citation network

Ching-Yi Chang et al.

Summary: This study utilizes meta-analysis and co-citation network analysis to examine the impact of peer assessments in various learning environments. The results suggest that combining technology with PA teaching methods has learning effects in web-based problem-solving activities, and propose criteria for future research based on a constructivist theoretical framework. The co-citation network analysis reveals heavy links between core articles focusing on combining PA with technology-enhanced learning environments and collaborative learning activities.

How to design the fair experimental classifier evaluation

Katarzyna Stapor et al.

Summary: Researchers often evaluate the quality of developed algorithms through computer experiments, supported by statistical analysis and experimental protocols. However, there is a concern about the randomness of data folds used for classification and the potential for manipulating experimental results using statistical evaluation methods. The paper highlights the weaknesses of commonly used experimental protocols and discusses the trustworthiness of evaluation methodology, fairness of presented evaluations, and the risk of unethical behavior.
