Plasticity, localization, and damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel studied by nanoscale digital image correlation

T. Vermeij et al.

Summary: The evolution of deformation from plasticity to localization to damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel was investigated through nanometer-resolution microstructure-correlated SEM-DIC strain mapping. Key plasticity mechanisms in ferrite and pearlite and their relation to microstructural arrangement were revealed. Two contrasting mechanisms for damage initiation in pearlite were identified, which potentially results in macroscale fracture. Recommendations for damage resistant ferritic-pearlitic steels are proposed based on the findings.

Mapping pure plastic strains against locally applied stress: Revealing toughening plasticity

Thomas E. J. Edwards et al.

Summary: This article discusses the separation of material deformation into elastic and plastic parts, emphasizing the importance of measuring the purely plastic component for understanding and designing structural materials. The study addresses the low toughness issue of body-centered cubic metals and proposes a mitigative theory. The limitations and potential misinterpretations of common postmortem transmission electron imaging are highlighted.

A Multi-modal Data Merging Framework for Correlative Investigation of Strain Localization in Three Dimensions

M. A. Charpagne et al.

Summary: A multi-modal data-merging framework is presented to reconstruct slip bands in three dimensions over millimeter-scale fields of view, utilizing a combination of 3D electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) measurements and high-resolution digital image correlation (HR-DIC) information. The method involves segmenting features within the strain field and microstructure, aligning datasets, and projecting slip bands into the 3D microstructure based on local crystallographic orientation, demonstrated in two materials: a face-centered cubic (FCC) nickel-base superalloy and hexagonal close-packed (HCP) titanium alloy.

Revisiting the martensite/ferrite interface damage initiation mechanism: The key role of substructure boundary sliding

L. Liu et al.

Summary: Martensite/ferrite (M/F) interface damage is crucial in controlling failure of dual-phase (DP) steels. The complex hierarchical structure of martensite induces heterogeneous and orientation-dependent plastic response, affecting the behavior of the M/F interface. By considering the substructure and morphology features, this study re-evaluates the M/F interface damage initiation mechanism, showing that substructure boundary sliding can trigger M/F interface damage and control the failure behavior of DP steels.

Slip-twinning interdependent activation across phase boundaries: An in-situ investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: Microstructural plastic strain distribution evolution is highly heterogeneous even in single-phase alloys. The transfer of slip/twinning across grain/phase boundaries plays a crucial role in governing this heterogeneity. Understanding of the fundamentals of transfer across grain boundaries has received significant attention, while knowledge about phase boundaries remains relatively limited.

Cool, Dry, Nano-scale DIC Patterning of Delicate, Heterogeneous, Non-planar Specimens by Micro-mist Nebulization

S. Shafqat et al.

Summary: This study presents a technique for nano-patterning highly delicate specimens for high-resolution DIC, using a controlled nebulized micro-mist containing single nanoparticles per droplet. The method successfully avoids the challenges of controlling nanoparticle interactions during the drying process, leading to high-quality patterns on physically and chemically sensitive specimens. The approach allows for convenient patterning of delicate samples at near-room temperature, without exposure to harsh processing steps.

On Biases in Displacement Estimation for Image Registration, with a Focus on Photomechanics

Frederic Sur et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance and limitations of image registration under small displacements in tasks such as optical flow estimation, stereoscopic imaging, and photomechanics. It highlights the significance of quantitatively evaluating the estimation biases and questions the potential for eliminating or reducing these biases. Additionally, numerical assessments of the predictive formula in the context of photomechanics are presented, with freely available software codes to reproduce the results.

Interactions between slip bands and interfaces in a compressed duplex stainless steel

X. Z. Li et al.

Summary: Interactions between slip bands and interfaces in a compressed duplex stainless steel were investigated in this study. It was found that grain boundaries and phase boundaries play important roles in plastic deformation, with twin GBs/PBs showing higher probability of slip transmission and lower probability of slip blockage compared to general GBs/PBs. Loading orientation has a minor effect on SB-GB interactions, but a pronounced effect on SB-PB interactions.

The effect of temperature on slip in microtextured Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo under dwell fatigue

M. E. Harr et al.

Summary: Research found that slip activity in Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo was more rapid and accumulated more at lower temperatures exhibiting dwell sensitivity, compared to higher temperatures. Plasticity primarily occurred through long-range basal slip in colocated grains with a high basal Schmid factor at all temperatures.
