Amino acid profile of skeletal muscle loss in type 2 diabetes: Results from a 7-year longitudinal study in asians

Serena Low et al.

Summary: This study longitudinally examined the relationship between amino acid profile and skeletal muscle mass loss in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, revealing the importance of branched-chain amino acids in preserving muscle mass. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this association.

Identification of traumatic acid as a potential plasma biomarker for sarcopenia using a metabolomics-based approach

Jaw-Shiun Tsai et al.

Summary: Through analyzing plasma metabolites in elderly and young adult groups, traumatic acid was identified as a potential plasma biomarker of sarcopenia, with concentrations positively correlated with sarcopenia and related factors. Further studies are needed to validate the results and explore underlying mechanisms.

Pathway-based metabolomics study of sarcopenia-related traits in two US cohorts

Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to validate the association of two metabolites, aspartic acid and glutamic acid, with sarcopenia-related traits (muscle mass and strength), and to identify novel metabolites from five metabolic pathways. The study included a discovery cohort and a validation cohort and successfully detected 12 important metabolites from these pathways. Glutamic acid was consistently associated with sarcopenia traits, while aspartic acid showed inconsistent results. Additionally, new metabolites N-acetyl-L-aspartic acid and carnosine were identified to be associated with muscle strength.

Sarcopenia: prevalence, associated factors, and the risk of mortality and disability in Japanese older adults

Akihiko Kitamura et al.

Summary: This study found that Japanese older adults meeting Asian criteria for sarcopenia had increased risks of all-cause mortality and disability. Sarcopenia-related factors other than ageing included hypoalbuminaemia, cognitive impairment, low activity, and depressed mood. Individuals with sarcopenia had higher risks of mortality and incident disability, with different factors influencing men and women.

Using circulating O-sulfotyrosine in the differential diagnosis of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that serum levels of O-sulfotyrosine were significantly higher in CKD patients compared to AKI patients, and were correlated with deteriorating renal function, aiding in the differentiation of AKI from CKD. Experimental results also demonstrated a time-dependent variation in O-sulfotyrosine levels.

Biomarkers related to fatty acid oxidative capacity are predictive for continued weight loss in cachectic cancer patients

Silvia Catanese et al.

Summary: Cancer patients undergoing systemic treatment showed significant alterations in amino acid levels and acylcarnitine patterns, which could be predictive for weight loss. Baseline acylcarnitine analysis was valuable in studying energy metabolism related to cancer cachexia. Pathway analyses indicated the involvement of serine/glycine and tryptophan pathways in this condition.

Understanding the gut microbiota and sarcopenia: a systematic review

Chaoran Liu et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the evidence on the effects of gut microbiota on muscle/sarcopenia, showing that altering the gut microbiota can directly affect muscle phenotypes. Probiotics, prebiotics, short-chain fatty acids, and bacterial products are potential novel therapies to enhance muscle mass and physical performance. The potential mechanisms of microbiome modulating muscle include protein, energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism, inflammation level, neuromuscular junction, and mitochondrial function.

Branched-chain Amino Acids: Catabolism in Skeletal Muscle and Implications for Muscle and Whole-body Metabolism

Gagandeep Mann et al.

Summary: BCAAs are crucial for skeletal muscle and whole-body anabolism and energy balance, but elevated levels and impaired metabolism may lead to chronic diseases like insulin resistance. Research is focusing on mechanisms regulating BCAA metabolism and its impact on muscle and whole-body metabolism.

Signatures and Clinical Significance of Amino Acid Flux in Sarcopenia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Miao Dai et al.

Summary: The dysregulation of amino acids is closely linked to sarcopenia, with concentrations of branched-chain amino acids like leucine and isoleucine significantly reduced in individuals with sarcopenia. Amino acid profiles may serve as useful biomarkers for the characterization of sarcopenia. Future studies are needed to explore the clinical significance of amino acids in diagnosing and treating sarcopenia.
