Identifying and appraising outcome measures for severe asthma: a systematic review

Anna Rattu et al.

Summary: The recommendations of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on outcome measurement instruments for asthma are widely used in clinical practice and research. However, there is no consensus on which outcome measures are important to patients with severe asthma and are valid for this population. Guidelines recommend the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to evaluate treatment response, but do not provide specific instruments. Additionally, the outcomes that patients consider important, such as quality of life, are not consistently considered by physicians when evaluating treatment response.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the real-world efficacy of recently and nearly licensed biological therapies for severe asthma. The results demonstrate that anti-IL5 biologicals may improve clinical outcomes in patients with severe asthma in a clinic environment with similar effect sizes to randomized controlled trials.

The economic burden of severe asthma in children: a comprehensive study

Gizem Pamuk et al.

Summary: The economic burden of severe asthma in children for the French NHI is substantial, with costs driven mainly by severe cases requiring biologics. Medication costs, particularly for omalizumab, account for a significant portion of the direct costs. The healthcare costs for children with severe asthma are 10 to 20 times higher than those with non-severe asthma.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a core set of outcomes for clinical drug trials in patients with moderate-to-severe asthma, including outcomes such as asthma exacerbation, change in asthma control, quality of life, hospital stay, and emergency department visit. These 5 core outcomes will allow for meaningful comparisons of asthma therapies across clinical trials.

European Respiratory Society clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis of asthma in children aged 5-16 years

Erol A. Gaillard et al.

Summary: This study introduces evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis of asthma in children aged 5-16 years, recommending spirometry, bronchodilator reversibility testing, and exhaled nitric oxide fraction as first-line diagnostic tests, and advising against diagnosing asthma in children based solely on clinical history or a single abnormal test result.

What matters to people with severe asthma? Exploring add-on asthma medication and outcomes of importance

Vanessa L. Clark et al.

Summary: This study explored what outcomes are important to patients with severe asthma and what characteristics they prioritize in new treatments. It found that patients prioritize improving overall quality of life, reducing asthma attacks, and being able to participate in physical activity. While most patients prioritized treatment efficacy in medication characteristics, some also considered side-effect profile and mode of delivery.
