Soil burial reduces decomposition and offsets erosion-induced soil carbon losses in the Indian Himalaya

Sankar Mariappan et al.

Summary: The global debate on whether soil erosion acts as a net source or sink of carbon remains inconclusive, especially in low-input agricultural systems in acknowledged global soil erosion hotspots in developing countries. However, studies in the Indian Himalaya have shown that high rates of soil erosion do not necessarily lead to net carbon loss to the atmosphere at the field scale, and there is potential to promote carbon storage through sustainable agricultural practices.

Response of surface soil nutrients and organic carbon fractions to tillage erosion vs. water erosion in an agricultural landscape

Pengzhi Zhao et al.

Summary: A mechanistic understanding of nutrient movement associated with erosion process is necessary for precision soil conservation measures. This study explored the effects of tillage and water erosion on surface soil nutrients and soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions. The results showed that water erosion had a greater impact on the distribution of total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), while tillage erosion had a more significant influence on particulate organic carbon (POC). Additionally, the relationship between microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and water erosion varied depending on the intensity of erosion.

Regional differences in mineral weathering characteristics of zonal soils under intensive agriculture

Chuanqin Huang et al.

Summary: Agricultural practices and fertilization have significant impacts on the mineral evolution and iron (hydr)oxides in soils, with climate conditions playing a key role in determining the extent of mineral weathering. Different agriculture types in various climate regions result in distinct mineralogical differences, especially in the phyllosilicate composition and Fe species. Intensive agriculture can influence the transformation of minerals and enhance susceptibility of iron species to management practices, particularly in temperate humid areas.
