Advances in the E → Z Isomerization of Alkenes Using Small Molecule Photocatalysts

Tomas Nevesely et al.

Summary: Geometrical E → Z alkene isomerization, a critical topic in organic photochemistry, has seen significant advancements in recent years. By utilizing energy transfer catalysis, directed isomerization of alkenes can be achieved. This review summarizes the progress in the field of geometric alkene isomerization enabled by energy transfer catalysis from 2000 to 2020, and discusses the reaction mechanisms, induction models, and applications in total synthesis and regioselective reactions.

Total synthesis and antimicrobial evaluation of (+)-hygrophorone B12 and its analogues

Takaaki Kamishima et al.

Summary: This paper describes the synthesis and evaluation of lead compounds with a new chemical skeleton that is not found in conventional antimicrobial agents. The study found that hygrophorone B-12 and its analogues are especially effective in preventing the proliferation of gram-positive bacteria. The researchers also discovered that certain structural features are pivotal to increase the antimicrobial activity of hygrophorone B.

Saegusa Oxidation of Enol Ethers at Extremely Low Pd-Catalyst Loadings under Ligand-free and Aqueous Conditions: Insight into the Pd(II)/Cu(II)-Catalyst System

Quan Zhu et al.

Summary: A highly efficient and practical Pd(II)/Cu(OAc)(2)-catalyst system for Saegusa oxidation has been described, converting enol ethers to enals with extremely low catalyst loadings. Large-scale applications of this system to important nature molecules demonstrate its synthetic utility, while also providing new insight for dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds and reducing Pd-catalyst loadings.

Enantioselective Conjugate Addition of Catalytically Generated Zinc Homoenolate

Yoshiya Sekiguchi et al.

Summary: An enantioselective conjugate addition reaction using a zinc homoenolate catalytically generated from cyclopropanol and added to an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone was reported. The reaction produced highly substituted cyclopentene derivatives with good to high enantioselectivities through intramolecular aldol condensation of 1,6-diketones. The use of a chiral amino alcohol as a ligand-accelerated the catalysis of the homoenolate generation and its conjugate addition.
