Genetic load: genomic estimates and applications in non-model animals

Giorgio Bertorelle et al.

Summary: Genetic variation, generated by mutation, recombination, and gene flow, can reduce the average fitness of a population. This genetic load can be estimated using various approaches, such as genome sequencing and computational techniques. Splitting the genetic load into realized load and masked load can improve our understanding of deleterious mutations in population genetics.

Clinical and exome sequencing findings in seven children with Bardet-Biedl syndrome from Turkey

Evren Gumus et al.

Summary: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with important implications for early diagnosis through genetic testing. Exome sequencing analysis in this study identified several previously unreported variants associated with the disease, with the most common clinical features being polydactyly and renal anomalies.

Novel Compound Heterozygous BBS2 and Homozygous MKKS Variants Detected in Chinese Families with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome

Li Huang et al.

Summary: This study identified genetic causes and clinical manifestations in two Chinese families with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS). Novel compound heterozygous variants in BBS2 gene and a known homozygous variant in MKKS gene were detected. Both families presented with retinitis pigmentosa, but had different systemic manifestations. The findings contribute to expanding the variant spectrum of BBS and enhancing understanding of the syndrome.

Ocular Characteristics of Patients With Bardet-Biedl Syndrome Caused by Pathogenic BBS Gene Variation in a Chinese Cohort

Xiaohong Meng et al.

Summary: This study identified five known and twelve novel variants in four BBS genes in 10 Chinese families with BBS, expanding the variation spectrum of the disease. The ocular characteristics of BBS patients were clinically highly heterogeneous, emphasizing the usefulness of a combination of ffERG and FVEP assessments in evaluating visual function in the advanced stage of retinopathy in BBS.

A case of Bardet-Biedl syndrome caused by a recurrent variant in BBS12: A case report

Ina Focsa et al.

Summary: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a clinically and genetically heterogenous disorder caused by primary cilia impairment. It affects multiple organ systems and is characterized by features such as retinal degeneration, obesity, polydactyly, and cognitive impairment. Pathogenic variants in 26 genes have been identified to be involved in the molecular basis of this syndrome.

Summary: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a hereditary disorder characterized by various symptoms. We generated and characterized an iPS cell line from a patient carrying a specific mutation associated with the syndrome, which retained the mutation and showed pluripotency and differentiation ability.

Summary: Bardet-Biedl Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with diverse clinical manifestations, including retinal dystrophy, obesity, and polydactyly. The disease is caused by various mutations in genes encoding specific proteins, and the understanding of its heterogeneity is crucial for early diagnosis and proper treatment.
