Berth allocation and quay crane assignment/scheduling problem under uncertainty: A survey

Filipe Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Port terminals play a critical role in connecting sea and land transportation, and berth allocation is among the most important planning operations. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of research on berth allocation and quay crane assignment/scheduling problems under uncertainty. Different methodologies and approaches are summarized, along with identified research trends and future directions.

The integrated quay crane assignment and scheduling problems with carbon emissions considerations

Nabil Kenan et al.

Summary: The continuous growth of container terminals' traffic worldwide has created a need for innovative research in port operations. However, the prominent focus of research on quay crane assignment and scheduling problems lacks consideration of carbon emissions. This paper aims to fill this gap by solving the problem of integrated quay crane assignment and scheduling with the inclusion of carbon regulatory policies. Two mathematical models are formulated using mixed integer programming, taking into account the effects of carbon taxation and carbon cap-and-trade. Sensitivity analysis reveals that minimizing the berthing time of vessels, which is greatly impacted by the number of assigned quay cranes, should be the primary focus of ports.

Stochastic programming approach for unidirectional quay crane scheduling problem with uncertainty

Shoufeng Ma et al.

Summary: The study focused on the unidirectional quay crane scheduling problem with stochastic processing times, formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer programming model. An integer L-shaped method and a simulated annealing algorithm were proposed for solving the problem, demonstrating the distinct advantages of the stochastic model in improving vessel completion times and service levels at container terminals.

Berth and quay crane allocation and scheduling with worker performance variability and yard truck deployment in container terminals

Kaoutar Chargui et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach for solving the problem of quay crane allocation and scheduling in container terminals, taking into account worker performance variability and yard truck deployment constraints. It is shown that integrative planning can minimize vessel departure time, while also providing a computationally efficient method to find a lower bound.
