Summary: This Primer provides an overview of the mechanisms, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of stroke in children. Childhood stroke is a significant cause of neurological damage and survivors often carry lifelong neurological deficits. While progress has been made in pediatric stroke research, the evidence for interventions, such as rapid reperfusion therapies, remains limited and delays in diagnosis and treatment continue to pose challenges.

Summary: This study found that the degree of early brain edema in patients with acute stroke is closely associated with clinical outcome, with higher edema levels predicting poorer prognosis. Therefore, quantitative measurements of edema may play an important role in evaluating the prognosis of patients with malignant stroke.

Ischemic lesion water homeostasis after thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion stroke within the anterior circulation: The impact of age

Summary: This study found that age is a significant factor in influencing brain edema formation after thrombectomy for LVO stroke. Younger patients showed higher edema formation on follow-up, while older patients had relatively lower levels. Successful recanalization reduced edema progression, but younger age remained independently associated with higher edema formation.

Reversible Ischemic Lesion Hypodensity in Acute Stroke CT Following Endovascular Reperfusion

Summary: In a study of 184 patients with acute ischemic anterior circulation stroke, it was found that a small percentage exhibited reversible ischemic edema after complete recanalization. Factors associated with edema arrest or reversibility included higher degree of recanalization and shorter time from imaging to recanalization. Clinical outcome was significantly better in patients without edema progression. This suggests that early revascularization may halt or even reverse vasogenic edema of ischemic tissue, leading to improved functional outcomes.
