On the reactivity of Al-group 11 (Cu, Ag, Au) bonds

Han-Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This study explores the reactions of a seven-membered heterocyclic potassium diamidoalumanyl with Cu(i), Ag(i), and Au(i) chloride N-heterocyclic carbene adducts, characterizing the resulting group 11-Al bonded derivatives through NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It was found that while reactions leading to reduction of the group 11 cations to base metals were observed, solid-state authentication of an Ag-Al sigma bond was also achieved. Furthermore, the reactivity of the NHC-supported Cu, Ag, and Au alumanyl derivatives with unsaturated small molecules was assessed, with observations of asymmetric Cu-C and Ag-C bonded isomers in certain cases.

Isolating elusive 'Al(μ-O)M' intermediates in CO2 reduction by bimetallic Al-M complexes (M = Zn, Mg)

Matthew J. Evans et al.

Summary: The corresponding Al(mu-O)M complexes were isolated by the reaction of compounds containing Al-Mg and Al-Zn bonds with N2O. Electronic structure analysis revealed mainly ionic Al-O and O-M bonds in these complexes, featuring an anionic mu-oxo centre. The reaction with CO2 confirmed that these species correspond to the proposed intermediates in the formation of mu-carbonate compounds.

Tetrylenes: Electronic Structure, Stability, Reactivity, and Ligand Properties-A Comparative DFT Study

Mikhail S. Nechaev

Summary: The study conducted a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the electronic structure, reactivity, and ligand properties of tetrylenes, divalent derivatives of group 14 elements, at the DFT level. Various stabilization factors were investigated for their effects on the chemical and ligand properties of tetrylenes. The data obtained can be used for rational design of tetrylenes and their complexes with transition metals.

Ambiphilic Al-Cu Bonding

Han-Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The reactivity of copper-alumanyl complexes is dependent on the identity of the carbene co-ligand, suggesting an ambiphilicity in the Cu-Al interaction. This divergent reactivity with carbodiimides and CO2 implies a complex relationship between the two metals in the complex.

Chemical Bonding in Silicon Carbonyl Complexes

Tetiana Sergeieva et al.

Summary: This work re-evaluates the bonding situation of silylene-carbonyl complexes, showing that their stability originates from a variety of bonding interactions, including sigma and pi interactions between the CO and silylene molecules. The study also reveals that the pyramidalization of the central silicon atom is not correlated with the strength of the pi-back donation, contrary to established chemical bonding models. By considering these additional bonding interactions, the paper sheds light on the bonding situation and provides key insights for expanding the scope of silylene-carbonyl chemistry.

Probing the Extremes of Covalency in M-Al bonds: Lithium and Zinc Aluminyl Compounds

Matthew M. D. Roy et al.

Summary: Synthetic routes to lithium, magnesium, and zinc aluminyl complexes were reported, with the first structural characterization of an unsupported lithium-aluminium bond. Crystallographic and quantum-chemical studies revealed a highly polar Li-Al interaction with a low bond order and relatively little charge transfer from Al to Li. Comparison with magnesium and zinc aluminyl systems showed changes to both the M-Al bond and the (NON)Al fragment, indicating a more covalent character in the latter complex, which was shown to react with CO2 via a pathway where the zinc centre acts as the nucleophilic partner.

Coinage metal aluminyl complexes: probing regiochemistry and mechanism in the insertion and reduction of carbon dioxide

Caitilin McManus et al.

Summary: The synthesis of coinage metal aluminyl complexes via a salt metathesis approach allows the insertion of heteroallenes and formation of M(CE2)Al bridging units, with differences in crystal structure and reactivity observed for copper, silver, and gold. The mechanism of CO2 to CO/carbonate transformation involves extrusion of CO from M(CO)(2)Al fragment to form a bimetallic oxide that assimilates a second molecule of CO2, with energetic barriers consistent with experimental observations and trends in M-C and M-O bond strengths.

N-Heterocyclic silylenes as ambiphilic activators and ligands

Mirjam J. Krahfuss et al.

Summary: This study highlights the recent developments of N-heterocyclic silylenes (NHSis) as ambiphilic activators and ligands in organometallic chemistry, comparing their properties with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) and phosphine ligands. NHSis show different ligation properties due to their unique frontier orbital region compared to NHCs, with donor properties closer to phosphines. They exhibit a stronger tendency to act as bridging ligands between metal centers and achieve more facile insertion reactions into metal-ligand bonds than NHCs, providing novel reactivities in basic organometallic chemistry and catalysis.
